Lucy Liu Channels Kill Bill For SNL's Tarantino Holiday Sketch

A Quentin Tarantino-inspired parody reimagines the Grinch's mayhem with bloody hilarity and star power.

Lucy Liu made waves this weekend with her surprise cameo on Saturday Night Live, reprising her iconic role as O-Ren Ishii from Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill for the hilariously absurd sketch titled "Quentin Tarantino's Kill Grinch." Although it was cut for time during the broadcast, the sketch was later released online, delighting fans who were eager to see Liu's unique twist on the holiday classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Directed by the imaginative mind behind some of cinema's most thrilling narratives, the sketch merges Yuletide cheer with the gritty style of Tarantino. The premise is both whimsical and dark, as Martin Short plays The Grinch, whose holiday spirit takes a violent turn when he accidentally drops the star from the top of the Christmas tree. What follows is chaos—The Grinch's misstep inadvertently leads to the impalement of a Who, setting off a bloody chain reaction, which is hilariously exaggerated.

Feeling the urgency of the situation, Cindy Lou Who decides to take action and calls for her sister, "Lucy Liu Who," to save the day. Liu makes her entrance fully decked out as O-Ren Ishii, brandishing her katana with all the flair fans have come to love. "Carving some Grinch" instead of Christmas meat, Liu humorously juxtaposes the holiday's festive nature with the action-packed antics of Tarantino's films. This bold imagery makes for some unforgettable comedy.

The juxtaposition of Tarantino’s trademark stylistic violence with the innocence of the Grinch story is not only surprising but also makes the sketch stand out. Despite the sketch's early cut from the live airing due to time constraints, its release online has allowed viewers to embrace the sheer absurdity of the concept.

"This sketch is a ton of fun, and it’s pretty crazy it was actually cut from the show!" enthused the creators, underscoring both the amusement and potential disappointment among fans who missed it live. Nevertheless, the online release ensures audiences can revel in the bizarre yet thrilling creative offerings of SNL.

While it remains uncertain why these creative sketches are sometimes cut, especially ones featuring beloved celebrities and characters, Liu's role serves as a festive reminder of creative hybridizations we seldom see during the holiday season. Her return to such a beloved and iconic character reminds fans of the blending of genres—from holiday classics to blood-soaked action, lending SNL's comedy its rich layers of humor.

Fans of both Liu and Tarantino have reason to celebrate this ingenious cross-pollination of styles, albeit through the narrow lens of what could have been. With Liu’s return, audiences are left hoping for more daring and unexpected performances—where the boundaries of creativity can be pushed. And who knows? Maybe they’ll seek to pepper the holiday specials with more of this thrilling flavor.
