The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have made a strategic move ahead of their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 campaign by signing Shardul Thakur to replace the injured Mohsin Khan. With the IPL season set to kick off on March 24, 2025, LSG found themselves in need of a capable fast bowler after Mohsin was ruled out due to a serious injury.
Mohsin Khan, a left-arm pacer, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear while playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy last December. Despite participating in the pre-season camp, he recently aggravated a calf strain while bowling, forcing the team to look for an alternative to fill the crucial bowling role.
Shardul Thakur, the seasoned all-rounder, was signed from the Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP) at a reserve price of INR 2 crore. Previously, Thakur had gone unsold in the mega auction held in 2024, but his wealth of experience—having played 95 IPL matches for five different franchises—made him an attractive addition for LSG. In his IPL career, Thakur has taken 67 wickets at an economy rate of 8.89.
In an official statement, the IPL confirmed LSG's decision, stating, "Thakur, an experienced all-rounder, has been signed from the Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP) at his reserve price of Rs 2 crore. A proven performer across all three formats for India, he brings valuable IPL experience, having played 95 matches for five franchises," according to ABP Live.
Shardul Thakur, who has enjoyed success with the Chennai Super Kings—winning the IPL twice in 2018 and 2021—now joins LSG as their sixth IPL franchise, having also represented Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rising Pune Supergiant. His versatility and skill set are expected to bolster LSG's bowling lineup, which is currently facing challenges due to injuries among key pace bowlers.
The Lucknow franchise will face off against the Delhi Capitals in their IPL 2025 opener at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam. This matchup adds an extra layer of urgency to Thakur's integration into the squad. LSG, eyeing a strong start to the season, will count on his expertise and experience to navigate this crucial match.
Adding to LSG’s concerns is the fact that express pacer Mayank Yadav is undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence due to a lumbar stress injury, ruling him out for the first half of the season. Avesh Khan and Akash Deep, two other fast bowlers, are also unavailable, creating a significant gap in LSG's pace attack.
Thakur's signing arrives at an opportune moment, particularly as he had previously signed a deal with Essex for a seven-match County Championship commitment. However, he had expressed a willingness to prioritize IPL commitments if selected, demonstrating his dedication to the league.
The team is certainly bracing for an uphill battle, yet there’s hope that the returning fast bowler will bring his experience and competitive spirit to the forefront. Thakur, with his depth of skill and solid performances in prior seasons, is poised to fill the void left by Mohsin's absence effectively.
In anticipation of the new season and amid a flurry of discussions regarding squad adjustments, the Lucknow Super Giants remain focused. As they prepare to take on the Delhi Capitals, the introduction of Shardul Thakur could prove pivotal in their quest for success in IPL 2025.
As the IPL season draws near, cricket fans and analysts alike are keeping a close eye on LSG's strategies and player dynamics, hoping for exciting matches ahead. With the reshaping of their squad, particularly with Thakur's role in play, LSG aims to make a strong statement in the prestigious tournament.
As the opening match approaches, it will be intriguing to see how Thakur adapts and performs under the LSG banner, potentially setting the tone for a thrilling season.
