Lucid Motors Achieves Record Sales Driven By Tesla Owners

The luxury EV maker reports a 28% increase in deliveries as it attracts former Tesla customers.

The Newark, California-based automaker announced that it sold 3,109 vehicles in the first quarter of 2025, marking a 28% increase compared to the same period last year. This surge in sales comes at a time when Tesla is facing its own set of challenges, leading many former Tesla owners to seek alternatives in the luxury electric vehicle segment.

Lucid Motors has not only ramped up its sales but has also made strides in production. The company reported that it has already produced 2,213 vehicles, with an additional 600 vehicles currently in transit to Saudi Arabia for final assembly. This logistical move highlights Lucid’s strategic partnership with the Saudi Arabian government, which has been a significant investor in the company. The backing from the Saudi sovereign wealth fund has provided Lucid with the necessary resources to enhance its production capabilities and expand its market reach.

The recent sales figures indicate a shift in consumer preferences, particularly among former Tesla owners. Lucid’s Interim CEO Marc Winterhoff revealed that over 50% of the company’s orders are coming from individuals who previously owned Tesla vehicles. “Tesla has always been a source of new customers for us,” Winterhoff stated during a Fox Business interview. “We saw a dramatic uptick in the last two months. Right now, 50% of all the orders that we have are from Tesla owners.” This trend suggests that Lucid Motors is successfully attracting customers who are looking for premium electric vehicles that offer a unique blend of luxury, performance, and innovative technology.

Founded in 2007 under the name Atieva, Lucid Motors initially focused on developing advanced battery technologies. However, in 2016, the company rebranded itself as Lucid Motors and introduced its flagship model, the Lucid Air. This luxury electric sedan has been designed to compete directly with Tesla’s Model S, offering impressive range, cutting-edge technology, and a high-end driving experience. The Lucid Air stands out with its 512-mile range on a single charge—the longest on the market. Its opulent design and comfort are reflected in the hefty price tag, ranging from $70,000 to $250,000, yet its promise has resonated sharply with a clientele ready to invest in excellence.

As Lucid celebrates its accomplishments with the Air, it eagerly anticipates the dawn of the Gravity SUV. Yet to grace the roads, the Gravity expands Lucid’s sphere of influence, reaching beyond luxury sedan aficionados. Intriguingly, more than three-quarters of Gravity’s burgeoning orders hail from customers new to Lucid. However, don’t mistake it for a budget option: the Gravity Grand Touring starts at $94,900, offering ample range and accommodation for seven. A cheaper Touring trim, which will start from $79,900, is set to go on sale in late 2025.

Even amidst this impressive uptick, Lucid isn’t limiting its aspirations to one continent. The Casa Grande facility saw the production of 2,213 vehicles, while 600 units embarked on a journey to Saudi Arabia. There, in Lucid’s sprawling AMP-2 facility, these vehicles will be prepped to meet their new owners. The AMP-2 is the automaker’s first international manufacturing facility, showcasing Lucid's commitment to expanding its global footprint.
