Luciano Darderi Advances With Tiebreak Victory In Munich

Flavio Cobolli eliminated in first round as Darderi prepares for next challenge

In a thrilling start to the ATP 500 tournament in Munich, Luciano Darderi showcased his impressive form by defeating Australian Christopher O'Connell in a tightly contested match that ended with a score of 7-6(3), 7-6(3). The match, which took place on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, lasted for nearly two hours and highlighted Darderi's resilience and skill on the court.

Darderi, who recently triumphed at the ATP 250 tournament in Marrakech, continued his winning streak, marking his sixth consecutive victory. The Italian-Argentinian, now ranked 47th in the world, faced O'Connell, who was a last-minute lucky loser replacement for Jiri Lehecka. Despite the unexpected change in opponent, Darderi adapted well, demonstrating his tactical prowess.

The first set was a nail-biter, with both players holding serve until the tiebreak. Darderi, under pressure, saved three break points during the set, showcasing his defensive skills. He managed to turn the tide in the tiebreak, coming back from a 2-3 deficit to win five consecutive points and take the set 7-6(3).

The second set mirrored the first in its intensity. Darderi had opportunities to break O'Connell's serve, particularly during the ninth game when he faced two break points at a crucial moment. However, O'Connell held firm, and once again, the set progressed to a tiebreak. This time, Darderi showcased his mental toughness, winning five of the last six points to secure the match.

Looking ahead, Darderi will face Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in the round of 16. Kecmanovic, currently ranked 48th, advanced after defeating American Marcos Giron in his first-round match. This upcoming clash promises to be another exciting encounter as both players seek to progress further in the tournament.

Meanwhile, it was a disappointing day for fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli, who was eliminated in the first round by Alexander Shevchenko. Cobolli, fresh off a strong performance at the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo and a victory at the ATP tournament in Bucharest, was unable to maintain his momentum. He won the first set against Shevchenko, taking it 7-6(2), but faltered in the subsequent sets, losing 3-6, 4-6.

Despite a promising start, Cobolli struggled to keep up his level of play. After winning the first set, he faced a dip in both physical and mental strength, allowing Shevchenko to rally back and take control of the match. Cobolli's defeat marks a setback, but he will have the opportunity to regroup as he prepares for upcoming events in Madrid, Rome, and the French Open.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Darderi as he aims to build on his recent successes and make a deep run at the BMW Open. The excitement continues as fans look forward to more thrilling matches in the days ahead.
