Lucha Brothers Depart AEW For WWE Amidst Contract Disputes

AEW's attempts to retain the popular luchadores have failed, paving the way for their WWE debut.

The wrestling world is buzzing with the news of the Lucha Brothers, consisting of Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fénix, departing from All Elite Wrestling (AEW) to join World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). This decision marks a significant transition for the duo, who have been staples of AEW since its inception.

According to wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, the Lucha Brothers had become disillusioned with their status within AEW, feeling they had stagnated. Despite AEW President Tony Khan's efforts to retain them with more lucrative contracts, the brothers were already aware of WWE's interest and had apparently made up their minds to leave. Meltzer noted, "The Lucha Brothers were feeling like they had stagnated in AEW and knew WWE had interest in signing them."

This saga began to gain traction over the summer of 2024 when rumors began swirling about the potential exit of Penta and Fénix. Reports indicated they were close to signing main roster deals with WWE as early as September. Sensing the impending departure, AEW added injury time to their contracts, effectively prolonging their tenure. While Penta's contract expired last month, Fénix's time with AEW extends until early 2025.

Further details emerged as AEW officials reached out to the brothers about new deals. Instead of engaging directly, the Lucha Brothers instructed Khan and other AEW higher-ups to communicate through their agent. Meltzer reported, "Khan believed he could keep them for another deal by offering more money." This strategic distancing became evident, leading to the decision to sideline the brothers from AEW programming since July.

While the situation may appear settled for now, it is evident changes are on the horizon. Multiple sources believe Penta has already signed with WWE, with vignettes hinting at his debut appearing on WWE Raw. Fénix is expected to follow suit, meaning both talents are poised to make significant impacts on the WWE scene soon.

The Lucha Brothers' exit from AEW to WWE is more than just contract negotiations; it reflects the dynamic nature of the wrestling industry where talent mobility is often influenced by perceived stagnation and opportunity. Khan’s determination to keep the brothers showcased his commitment to fostering top talent, yet it also laid bare the competitive nature of professional wrestling.

The brothers, known for their high-flying style and electrifying performances, have garnered immense popularity among wrestling fans. Their departure may open new doors for their careers and provide WWE with fresh talent capable of captivating audiences.

For wrestling fans, this shift is significant, indicating the heightened stakes and shifting allegiances within the industry. Both WWE and AEW are continually vying for top wrestling talent, and the outcome of this competition is sure to influence the narratives and spectacles fans can expect moving forward.

With the year drawing to a close, both AEW and WWE will undoubtedly reflect on the Lucha Brothers’ departure. For Penta and Fénix, this change signifies new beginnings and potential challenges as they step onto the grand stage of WWE. No doubt, their legacies will carry weight as they forge their paths beyond AEW, and their debut on WWE platforms is eagerly anticipated among fans and insiders alike.

Watch for announcements surrounding their debuts and stay tuned as the wrestling world continues to change around these talented luchadores!
