L&T Partners With John Cockerill To Boost Green Energy Initiatives

The MoU aims to explore advanced concentrated solar power and thermal energy storage technologies, enhancing India's bid for sustainable energy solutions.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced a promising advancement in green power technology through a collaboration with John Cockerill Energy. On March 24, 2025, L&T's subsidiary, L&T Energy Green Tech, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the global entity to explore concentrated solar power (CSP) and thermal energy storage (TES) technologies. The agreement aims at identifying and developing strategic collaboration opportunities in manufacturing, component supply, and engineering solutions crucial for the deployment of these innovative energy projects.

L&T Energy Green Tech positions itself as a leader in sustainable energy solutions. The subsidiary's focus spans the green energy value chain, including low-carbon technologies such as green hydrogen and electrolyzer manufacturing. With their emphasis on research and development, LTEGL aims to spearhead advancements in integrated green energy solutions.

Subramanian Sarma, Whole-Time Director and President (Energy) of L&T emphasized the importance of this partnership: “Ensuring round-the-clock availability of renewable power is crucial for driving the global energy transition. Our collaboration with John Cockerill marks a significant step in this direction, combining L&T's end-to-end expertise in manufacturing, EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction), and services with John Cockerill's global leadership in energy.” This joint initiative emphasizes L&T's commitment to accelerating the adoption of next-generation green energy technologies.

Thomas Bohner, CEO of John Cockerill Energy is equally optimistic about this collaboration: “With our expertise and references, including five state-of-the-art solar thermal receivers for concentrating solar power plants in the UAE, China, Chile, and South Africa, we are confident this partnership will enable us to deliver these offerings to companies in India that are actively pursuing low-carbon energy solutions.” The confidence expressed by both parties underscores the significance of the partnership as a boost for sustainable energy in India.

Derek Shah, Senior Vice President & Head, L&T Energy - Green Manufacturing & Development echoed the sentiment, stating that leveraging synergies between L&T and John Cockerill will expedite the deployment of green renewable energy generation. Shah remarked, “Partnering with John Cockerill and leveraging its expertise in CSP and TES technology allows us to integrate advanced energy storage solutions with our robust engineering and manufacturing capabilities.”

Furthermore, Vivek Bhide, Regional President and Group Transformation Officer at John Cockerill, mentioned the growing partnership between Indian businesses and the government in support of sustainable energy initiatives: “Indian businesses are increasingly partnering with the government in supporting its move towards sustainable energy adoption and net-zero commitments. Our CSP and TES technology will aid this transition and deliver reliable and sustainable energy solutions to Indian businesses.”

The significance of this MoU is reflected in the performance of L&T shares, which rose by 1.98% to Rs 3,485 on the day of the announcement. Earlier in the day, the stock even peaked at Rs 3,517 apiece, showcasing the market's positive reaction to the partnership.

In addition, L&T's financial health appears robust, with the company reporting a 13.96% increase in consolidated net profit for the third quarter of FY25, amounting to Rs 3,358.84 crore compared to Rs 2,947.36 crore in the corresponding quarter of FY24. Revenue from operations also saw a substantial rise of 17.31% year on year, hitting Rs 64,667.78 crore.

This recent agreement and business growth signal a broader trend towards investment in sustainable technologies and renewable energy, reinforcing L&T's position in the industry as a pioneering force in creating a sustainable future.
