Lower Division Teams Aim For Upsets In US Open Cup

Exciting matchups highlight the Fourth Round of the tournament as underdogs face MLS giants

The Fourth Round of the 2025 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is upon us, featuring sixteen thrilling matches over two days, May 6 and May 7. This year's tournament sees lower division teams vying to pull off major upsets against Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs, with twelve USL Championship teams and several from Division 3 still in contention. The winners will advance to the Round of 16, and excitement is palpable as fans gear up for what promises to be an action-packed couple of days.

On Tuesday, May 6, five matches are scheduled, including a notable clash between D.C. United and Charleston Battery at Audi Field in Washington, DC, kicking off at 7 p.m. ET. This match marks the return of the Coffee Pot Cup, a trophy born from a memorable incident in 1999 when Charleston stunned D.C. United with a late equalizer, leading to an eventual victory in extra time. The last time these two teams met in an official competition was in the 2008 Open Cup Final, where D.C. triumphed 2-1.

Charleston Battery, currently riding a four-game winning streak in the USL Championship, will be looking to make history. They eliminated South Georgia Tormenta FC decisively in the Third Round with a 4-0 win, thanks to a hat-trick from MD Myers. Meanwhile, D.C. United has struggled in the MLS, sitting in the bottom half of the Eastern Conference with a record of 3-5-3 and having allowed a league-high 23 goals. Christian Benteke leads United with six goals, but the team has not been able to find consistent form.

Also on the docket for May 6 is North Carolina FC taking on Charlotte FC at First Horizon Stadium, also at 7 p.m. ET. North Carolina FC began their Open Cup journey with a 3-1 victory over Charlotte Independence, while Charlotte FC has had a decent start to their league season but has lost two consecutive matches. This match is particularly significant as North Carolina FC seeks to establish themselves as the kings of Carolina, having a historical edge over their Charlotte rivals.

Nashville SC will face the Chattanooga Red Wolves SC at 8 p.m. ET in another intriguing matchup. The Red Wolves are one of only five teams remaining from the First Round, and they have made a remarkable run thus far, including a penalty shootout victory over New Jersey Alliance in the opening game. Nashville, however, is looking to return to form, sitting mid-table in MLS with a record of 5-4-2.

The night will conclude with the Colorado Springs Switchbacks taking on the New York Red Bulls at Weidner Field at 9:30 p.m. ET. The Red Bulls are known for their resilience, having not lost to a Division 2 team in the Red Bull era. Meanwhile, the Switchbacks, defending USL champions, are eager to prove their mettle after a hard-fought 3-2 extra time victory in their last match.

On Wednesday, May 7, the action continues with eleven matches, starting with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC hosting New York City FC at 7 p.m. ET. Pittsburgh opened their tournament with a narrow 1-0 win over Columbus Crew 2, while NYCFC has been on a roll, winning three of their last four matches in MLS.

In a highly anticipated matchup, the Tampa Bay Rowdies will host Orlando City SC at 7:30 p.m. ET. This rivalry is heating up, as Tampa Bay seeks to avenge their 2022 Open Cup loss to Orlando. The Rowdies narrowly avoided an upset in their last match, winning on penalties, while Orlando is on an eight-game unbeaten streak.

Chicago Fire FC will play Detroit City FC at SeatGeek Stadium at 8 p.m. ET, marking the first meeting between these two clubs. Chicago is hoping to find form after a rough patch in MLS, while Detroit is enjoying a solid run in the USL Championship.
