Low Ratings Mark Final Episode Of 'Hikaru Kimi E'

NHK's historical drama on Murasaki Shikibu ends with mixed audience response.

The final episode of the highly-anticipated NHK Taiga drama, Hikaru Kimi e, featured significant events leading to its conclusion, marking yet another chapter in Japan's rich television narrative. The finale aired on October 15 and drew considerable attention due to the series' portrayal of one of the most notable figures from Japanese literature, Murasaki Shikibu, played by the acclaimed actress Yuriko Yoshitaka.

Delving deep, the drama examined the life of Murasaki Shikibu, who penned The Tale of Genji, recognized as the world's oldest novel. Despite its ambition and historical backdrop set during the Heian period, the series faced scrutiny for its viewership ratings. On the airdate of its last episode, it was revealed the show garnered household ratings of 11.0% and individual ratings of 6.5%, figures reported to reflect the Kanto region's viewership, according to data provided by Video Research.

Notably, the finale's ratings revealed the downward trend of ratings throughout the series. The drama launched with initial ratings of 12.7% and peaked at 7.5% during its first episode, but the average ratings for the series stood at 10.7%, rendering it the second lowest-rated NHK Taiga production throughout history. This is particularly telling alongside the backdrop of previous productions like Idaten, which fell to 8.2% ratings, setting the bar low for future endeavors.

Yoshitaka's portrayal of the revered Shikibu was met with varying degrees of response, with some praising the depth she brought to the character. The final episode, titled “Ahead of the Story,” encapsulated pivotal moments showcasing the complex relationships between Shikibu and her acquaintance, Fujiwara no Michinaga, portrayed by actor Yuu Emoto. The episode saw pivotal developments where characters grappled with love, ambition, and the looming specter of mortality.

Within the series' lengthy forty-eight episodes, it became apparent how the narrative integrated historical elements with dramatic storytelling. For example, central to the narrative was Shikibu's delicate balancing of her artistic capabilities with societal expectations, crafting relationships both tender and tumultuous with Michinaga, who is also regarded as the inspiration for the protagonist from her fictional works.

Through the layers of conflict presented, viewers were led through emotional encounters and dramatic revelations. A poignant moment arose when Shikibu confides her complex feelings about Michinaga and her literary pursuits to her confidante, Ryoko, played by actress Hana Kuroki. This exchange not only highlights Shikibu’s internal struggles but also casts light on the expectations placed upon women during the Heian period.

The series, led through the creative storytelling of scriptwriter Shizuka Oishi, intertwined elements of history with character-driven narratives. Oishi's previous successes include Futari-kko and Second Virgin, giving her ample experience to weave this complex tale. The change of tone evident throughout the series showcased her innovative approach to adapting such historical material.

Despite its ambition, the quality of viewership for Hikaru Kimi e raises questions about audience reception toward historical adaptations moving forward. Trends show the inclination of viewers gravitating toward contemporary dramas rather than prolonged period pieces. The NHK Taiga's record since 2000 reflects this shift, as historical entries have had increasingly mixed reviews, and lately, decreasing audience numbers.

When placed alongside records of past Taiga dramas, Hikaru Kimi e now places as the second-lowest rated series. The lowest scoring productions had been produced since 2019—Idaten was initially regarded as #24 on the NHK Taiga list with audiences drawn less to historical interpretations. Yet, one can only wonder if the current series underperformed due to its narrative, which perhaps felt slower and less engaging than the survey-driven content with which audiences are more familiar.

Interestingly, the ratings reveal contrasts with the high audience engagement patterns seen with other formats such as variety shows or live entertainment which dominate screens today. Historically, audiences of NHK have shown steadfast support for strong narratives, particularly dramas imbued with cultural significance. The cultural loss of such Taiga productions may present challenges for NHK as they strive to maintain relevance within audience preferences.

Ending on the question of future NHK Taiga dramas, there’s still much speculation on whether the network will adapt to the shifting tides of viewership and viewer engagement or adhere to its long-standing traditions of historical storytelling. Observing the trends of the past decade, NHK must question how to capture modern-day audiences with content. Will historical dramas evoke as much interest as modern narratives do, or will the legacy of figures like Murasaki Shikibu continuously inspire narratives for generations to come?

With the airing of the final episode, Hikaru Kimi e not only marks the end of one series but sparks important discussions on the future of NHK Taiga dramas and their relationship with contemporary audience expectations.
