Los Angeles Wildfires Disrupt Game Development Studios

Major studios prioritize employee safety amid devastating wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles.

The wildfires raging across Los Angeles are not only devastating communities but are also impacting major video game studios located within the area. Activision Blizzard, Riot Games, and Insomniac Games are among the companies finding themselves on the frontline of this crisis as they prioritize employee safety and well-being amid the chaos.

According to reports, as of January 10, five people have died, and more than 9,000 structures have either been damaged or destroyed, with at least 130,000 residents currently under evacuation orders. The wildfires have swiftly spread through several neighborhoods including the Pacific Palisades near Santa Monica, where Activision Blizzard has its headquarters. Due to the severity of the fires, Santa Monica declared a local state of emergency.

“Employee safety and well-being is our top priority,” stated an Activision spokesperson, as reported by PC Gamer. The representative emphasized the company’s commitment to keeping their employees informed and supported, saying they were “actively monitoring the situation as it is quickly developing.” They have reached out to employees located near the affected areas to check on their safety and to provide necessary resources.

Similarly, Riot Games has closed its offices for all but “critical functions” since the fires erupted. Dylan Jadeja, CEO of Riot Games, conveyed his gratitude to employees and the gaming community for their outreach during this difficult time. “Nothing can be said to truly acknowledge the pain and suffering…,” he expressed on LinkedIn. “For Rioters reading this, please understand, the mission and the work will always be there. What matters most right now is taking care of yourselves and each other.”

The emotional toll of the wildfires is undeniable, as Jadeja noted the heartbreak within communities severely affected by the flames. He also mentioned the uncertainty surrounding what assistance might be needed and how the company intends to help once the immediate dangers have passed.

Just east of the danger zone, Insomniac Games' office situated in Burbank is also feeling the brunt of the situation. Nick Folkman, Senior Writer at Insomniac, shared his experience from the office on Bluesky, noting, “Sitting at my office desk... the wind outside...sounds like when you’re near the ocean.” This reflects the unusual and often frightening atmosphere created by the wildfires, as employees remain alert to the situation.

These fires have not only affected local lives but also shut down several production activities throughout Hollywood, delaying the filming of anticipated projects like ‘Fallout’ season 2. The entertainment industry's reliance on Los Angeles puts additional pressure to respond quickly and effectively to such emergencies.

While firefighters work tirelessly to contain the blazes fueled by winds exceeding 100 mph, the community is coming together to support one another. Activision acknowledged the complexity of the current challenges and reiterated their focus on ensuring safety: “We’re doing the very best we can,” said LA County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone. Their efforts exemplify how dire the circumstances are, with firefighting support being called from outside Los Angeles to assist with the containment and management of these chaotic fires.

Looking forward, once the immediate threat has subsided, both Activision Blizzard and Riot Games have indicated intentions to stand by their community. Riot Games has promised to “give back” to the Los Angeles area, recognizing the deep ties the company has with its local employees and their families. They aim to offer resources and support to those affected not just during the crisis but well after it has concluded.

With the wildfires illustrating the unpredictable and destructive forces of nature, all eyes are on how the gaming studios will navigate the fallout and contribute to the recovery efforts. It is evident the focus must shift from game development to humanitarian aid as both individuals and corporations rally to stabilize the communities they love.

With the situation still developing, many Americans are left concerned about the future of their homes and workplaces. The collective response will be pivotal as Los Angeles braces for potentially the most costly wildfire disaster yet. For now, the gaming giants reaffirm their dedication to their employees and their communities during this unexpected and trying time.
