Long-Running Japanese Show Kintama Cancelled Amid Controversy

Fans express heartbreak over the end of beloved series and plea for preservation of popular segments.

Fans of Japanese television are mourning the abrupt cancellation of the long-running program "Kintama" following its two-decade run on air. The program, officially titled “Nakagawa Masahiro’s Friday Smile,” was abruptly discontinued due to surrounding controversies involving its star, Nakagawa Masahiro. broadcaster TBS confirmed the show's cancelation on January 20, 2023, amid troubling reports of his involvement in personal disputes.

"Kintama," which began airing in October 2001, gained notoriety for its unique format and heartwarming series of social experiments, including segments like “Solo Farming” and “Kintama Dance Club.” After 24 years, the show's end has sparked waves of disappointment from fans who praised its innovative programming.

According to former writer Osamu Suzuki, who was deeply involved with the show for many years, “Kintama was unlike any other show... it truly was one of a kind.” Reflecting on his time with the production, he shared on Instagram, “I am grateful for all the experiences gained through this program, which resonate deeply with my life.”

Viewers particularly lament the fate of the “Solo Farming” segment, which first aired in 2008 and showcased the endeavors of director Helmut Watanabe establishing life away from the city. Many listeners expressed their concerns online, posting comments like, “What will happen to Solo Farming? That was my favorite!” and “Please don’t drop Solo Farming, it livened up my weekends.”

The show became known not only for its heartfelt content but also for its insightful interviews, friendship narratives, and relatable life challenges faced by Japanese citizens. Suzuki noted how he and the production team steered important discussions around personal issues, one of which was his wife's experience during her pregnancy aimed at creating connections with viewers facing similar hardships. “We could bring these stories to light, and I'm certain they reached many who were hurting,” he recalled.

No detail was spared when it came to the show’s creation process. Suzuki highlighted the commitment of the crew, describing intense passion and collective efforts to produce each episode. “The level of dedication we had was unparalleled,” he expressed.

The decision to cancel “Kintama” follows allegations against Nakagawa, which came to light just before the new year when it was revealed he had settled out of court following reports of misconduct involving another individual. The scandal prompted immediate ramifications for his other engagements and quickly escalated media scrutiny. TBS clarified the connection between Nakagawa's personal troubles and the show’s cancelation.

Fans have expressed their heartache over the show's end and shared memories of their favorite episodes, with many reminiscing about the authentic storytelling and genuine connections it created. “Kintama was more than just entertainment; it felt like family,” one viewer voiced. “How can it just end? We need closure!”

Despite the cancellation, the influence of “Kintama” is expected to endure. Its unique narratives, character studies, and relatability have undoubtedly left lasting impressions on viewers, proving the power of long-running programs to touch on real human experiences.

Osamu Suzuki wrapped up his tribute with kind recognition toward the production team, stating, “To all who have been part of ‘Kintama,’ thank you from the bottom of my heart.” His expression resonates with the multitude of fans who are sad to say goodbye to this cherished television staple.
