Long Thanh Airport Construction Reaches Key Milestone

Project progresses as engineers install first glass panels and accelerate other works

On February 28, 2025, the Vietnam Airport Corporation (ACV) announced significant progress on the Long Thanh Airport project, with construction of the passenger terminal currently at approximately 35% completion. The announcement, made shortly after the Lunar New Year, highlighted the mobilization of nearly 4,000 engineers and workers, along with advanced machinery, to accelerate the project’s timeline.

The project involves extensive efforts, ranging from the layering of reinforced concrete to the implementation of electrical systems, air conditioning, and fire protection systems, progressing concurrently across various aspects. Each component of the construction has achieved completion levels varying from 22% to 80%. "With each component achieving from 22% to 80%, the construction is on track," stated representatives from ACV.

The passenger terminal, regarded as the heart of the mega-airport, is rapidly taking shape with its massive steel framework. Already, the main steel beams of the terminal wings have been fully installed, with the central section nearing 80% completion. Roof installations are also underway, with several wings almost finished. Notably, the installation of the first glass panels has commenced, beginning with skylights and curtain wall systems, marking the emergence of the terminal's modern facade.

One project engineer commented, "We are pushing forward to expedite every phase of the project," reflecting the urgency and ambition driving the construction team. The completion of these glass installations is expected to continue for several months, contributing to the terminal's sophisticated design.

Beyond the terminal itself, construction on the airport's runways is also intensifying, aiming for readiness by April 30, 2025. A new concrete corridor has begun to take form right before the terminal, creating a noticeably transformed exterior compared to previous phases of development.

Simultaneously, the infrastructure surrounding the airport is gaining momentum, with the connecting roads—T1 and T2—reporting completion levels of around 73%. Notably, the T1 route, particularly the section adjoining Gate 1 of Long Thanh Airport, has seen the installation of 2.4 kilometers of porous asphalt.

Confronted with increasing pressure to meet deadlines, ACV has instructed contractors to re-evaluate and revise progress plans, as well as bolster staffing and equipment to hasten work on each aspect of the project. The corporation has also sought assistance from local authorities to expedite the necessary procedures to supply the remaining 4.9 million cubic meters of stone required for the airport's construction, ensuring the project stays on schedule.

The Long Thanh Airport project is poised to significantly transform Vietnam's airport infrastructure, enhancing connectivity and supporting the nation’s growing aviation sector. With ambitious plans and extensive resources being dedicated, the responsible parties are determined to deliver this landmark project on time, showcasing Vietnam's commitment to advancing its transportation capabilities.
