London Zoo Safeguards Banksy Gorilla Mural

Removal sparks debate about the artist's message and wildlife conservation

London Zoo recently removed a mural by the elusive street artist Banksy for "safekeeping". The artwork, featuring a gorilla lifting the shutter of the zoo gates to let creatures escape, attracted significant attention from visitors.

The mural was part of Banksy's animal-themed art series, which appeared across London over nine consecutive days. This specific piece was the ninth and final creation, captured the imagination of many onlookers.

This poignant piece depicted the gorilla allowing birds and a sea lion to frolic free, leaving viewers pondering its potential symbolism. It was covered with a reproduction of the original mural, accompanied by a playful sign reading: "Banksy woz ere."

Kathryn England, the zoo's chief operating officer, expressed gratitude for the joy the artwork generated, stating its importance to the zoo’s history. She acknowledged the significant spotlight the piece cast on wildlife appreciation.

Security measures were tightly implemented to protect the mural during its display, including clear plastic shielding. Unfortunately, the zoo announced its removal after five days due to the need to fully restore its entrance operations.

The artwork sparked varied interpretations among the public—it was seen as both an "anti-zoo message" and potentially as a tribute to the institution itself. Recent observations indicate it stirred thoughtful discussions, providing both laughter and contemplation.

Experts, like Jasper Tordoff from MyArtBroker, found meaning beyond the surface. He suggested the mural could signify all the animals seen around London may have come from the zoo.

Throughout its existence, the Banksy piece was covered, and its fate remains uncertain as the zoo has not yet determined where it will reside next. Disturbingly, this mural marks at least the fifth one from this series to be removed or defaced.

Other recent works by Banksy, including those featuring goats and elephants, have faced similar fates. The pieces sometimes vanished shortly after their appearance, drawing both thieves and admirers.

The howling wolf mural, for example, was taken by masked individuals within hours of its reveal, leaving onlookers shocked. Some pieces were discreetly removed or vandalized, ending their public display prematurely.

Although this recent trend of vandalism poses concerns, it highlights the increasing value and interest surrounding Banksy’s work. The city's engagement with the artwork allows for meaningful reflections on art's intersection with public spaces.

For now, visitors to London Zoo can find the replica mural—still marked by the cheeky phrase from Banksy. The zoo continues to work on how best to preserve this momentous piece within their history.

While Banksy remains shrouded in mystery, his impact on public art and conversations about wildlife and conservation feels ever more prominent. His works serve as reminders of the delicate balance between nature and human intervention.

Questions linger on how to balance this growing interest with the protection of the artwork. The official discourse around Banksy's designs encourages dialogue about their meanings and sociopolitical contexts.

Overall, the removal of this mural signifies more than just the loss of art for the public; it stands as a poignant moment where public engagement, art, and wildlife intersect. It keeps the conversation about artists like Banksy alive, ensuring their relevance continues long past their visible contributions.
