Lokomotiv Makes History With First KHL Regular Season Championship

Yaroslavl's Lokomotiv secures Continental Cup after decisive victory over Admiral.

Yaroslavl's Lokomotiv made history on March 17, 2025, by clinching the Continental Hockey League (KHL) regular season championship for the first time ever after defeating Vladivostok's Admiral with a decisive score of 4:1 at Arena 2000.

Lokomotiv's impressive victory secured their status as the best team of the regular season, as they amassed 98 points across 66 games, leaving other teams trailing behind without hope of catching up. The club's win also meant they became the proud holders of the Continental Cup, named after the legendary Viktor Tikhonov, which is awarded to the top-performing team of the regular season.

The match began with Yaroslavl's Rihards Paniks scoring the first goal just over two minutes in. His effort set the tone for the home team, which continued to dominate the ice. Martin Gernat then extended the lead, marking the second goal of the match shortly after, with Paniks setting him up for a spectacular shot tucked neatly away.

While Vladivostok's Danil Gutik managed to bring some hope to his team with a goal, it wasn't enough to shift the momentum. Alexander Polunin scored for Lokomotiv not long after, bringing the score to 3:1, and Artur Kayumov capped off the win with another goal, just seconds before the final buzzer sounded.

“It feels fantastic to secure the Continental Cup and to take first place overall. Winning is what we aimed for from the start, and I’m proud of how the team came together,” said Lokomotiv's head coach Igor Nikitin, celebrating with his players post-match.

The victory not only marks Lokomotiv's first-ever title as regular-season champions but also highlights their second title as champions of the Western Conference. The first time they held this title was back during the 2010-11 season.

Lokomotiv's achievement is significant considering the historical trend within the KHL, where the regular-season champions have managed to translate this success to playoff glory only once, with CSKA winning the Gagarin Cup following their regular-season championship in the 2018-19 season. Now, the Yaroslavl club is determined not to be simply content with their achievements so far.

Despite this celebratory moment, Nikitin has emphasized the importance of focusing on what lies ahead. "We must now prepare rigorously for the playoffs, and this will be particularly challenging with the high expectations on our shoulders. Winning the Continental Cup is just laying the groundwork; the real test lies ahead," he remarked.

On the other hand, Vladivostok's Admiral, with only 68 points, was ranked eighth in the Eastern Conference. They are set to face Metallurg Magnitogorsk next. Despite their loss, Admiral’s performance was commendable for reaching the playoffs, but coach Leonid Tambiev expressed his displeasure with the execution of their game plan during the match. “Mistakes led to us not capitalizing on moments, and we found it hard to come back from 1-3,” he stated frankly about his team's shortcomings.

Both Lokomotiv and Admiral will need to regroup quickly, with their next matches scheduled for March 19. Lokomotiv will take on CSKA, testing them against one of their toughest rivals, and Admiral will meet Metallurg, both facing the added pressure of playoff positioning.

All things considered, Lokomotiv's historic victory not only brings pride to the city but sets the stage for what could be an exciting playoff season as they look to prove their worth beyond the regular season.

With their resilience and the momentum from this victory, Lokomotiv is poised to make a significant run during the playoffs, embracing the challenge of attempting to transform their regular-season success to coveted Gagarin Cup glory.
