Logan Couture Retires After 16 Seasons With Sharks

Captain ends career due to ongoing injury struggles and reflects on his legacy

Logan Couture, the long-time captain of the San Jose Sharks, has officially announced his retirement from professional hockey after a distinguished career spanning 16 seasons. The announcement came on April 15, 2025, during a heartfelt press conference at the SAP Center, where Couture reflected on his journey and the challenges that ultimately led to his decision.

At 36 years old, Couture has been battling a debilitating condition known as osteitis pubis, which has sidelined him for the entire 2024-25 season and limited him to just six games in the previous season. This condition, characterized by inflammation in the joint between the left and right pubic bones, has caused significant pain and hindered his ability to play. "I'm not physically able to play anymore," Couture stated, expressing the emotional weight of his decision. "It's tough. It sucks. But it is what it is. I loved and cherished every single moment that I got to play in this league. The NHL is everything that I thought it would be when I was a kid."

Couture's career has been nothing short of remarkable. Drafted with the ninth overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft, he quickly established himself as one of the franchise's cornerstone players. Over his 16 seasons with the Sharks, Couture accumulated impressive statistics: 323 goals and 378 assists in 933 regular-season games. His postseason performance was equally stellar, with 48 goals and 101 points in 116 playoff games, making him one of the most clutch performers in the franchise's history.

The highlight of Couture's career came during the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs, where he led the Sharks to their first-ever Stanley Cup Final. He notched 10 goals and 30 points during that postseason, a feat that solidified his status as a key player in the team's history. Additionally, Couture played a pivotal role in the Sharks' run to the Western Conference Finals in 2019, where he led the team with 14 goals and 20 points.

Although he had hoped to return to the ice after initially missing the first 45 games of the 2023-24 season due to a lower-body injury, Couture’s attempts to come back were thwarted by ongoing pain. He played his final game on January 31, 2024, and has not been able to skate since. "Through the whole process, that last game I played in Anaheim, I was in a ton of pain," Couture remarked. "I took a second at the end of the game to kind of look around just in case. I guess it’s been in my mind that there was a chance that could have been it since that game."

Sharks general manager Mike Grier praised Couture's contributions to the team, calling him "one of the greatest players" in franchise history. Grier noted Couture's leadership qualities and his ability to elevate his game in critical moments, stating, "You were a clutch playoff performer, dominant in the playoffs. In the biggest games and in the biggest moments, you were at your best." Couture was named the Sharks' captain in September 2019, succeeding Joe Pavelski.

During the press conference, Couture expressed gratitude towards the Sharks organization and his teammates. "I want to thank the Sharks organization and all of my teammates over the course of my career. And most especially, thank you to the Sharks and hockey fans around the world for your continued support," he said. His departure marks the end of an era for the Sharks, who are currently in a rebuilding phase and hold the worst record in the NHL at 20-49-12.

Couture's legacy will undoubtedly be felt as the Sharks look to the future. The team has been actively drafting new talent, including the recent selection of Macklin Celebrini with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft. As Couture steps away from the ice, he leaves behind a team that is eager to build on the foundation he helped create.

Looking ahead, Couture plans to focus on his family and spend time with his two young children. "I love hockey. Obviously, it's all I've ever done and I have never really worked a real job outside of this. I feel like I know the game well. I can think the game well, so I do see a future but not anytime too soon. I'm just going to take some time with the kids and figure it out from there," he shared.

As Couture embarks on this new chapter of his life, the Sharks organization and their fans will undoubtedly remember his contributions and the passion he brought to the game. With his retirement, the franchise not only loses a talented player but also a leader who embodied the spirit of the Sharks for over a decade and a half.

Logan Couture's journey in the NHL may have come to an end, but his impact on the San Jose Sharks and the memories he created with fans and teammates will last a lifetime.
