Lodha Brothers: A Family Divided Over Trademark Dispute

Mother urges reconciliation amid bitter rivalry and legal battles over the 'Lodha' trademark.

The long-standing feud between real estate heirs Abhishek and Abhinandan Lodha has escalated, drawing attention not only for its familial ties but also for its significant legal ramifications. Abhishek serves as the Managing Director of Macrotech Developers, one of India’s leading property firms, and has been embroiled in legal battles over the use of the family trademark, 'Lodha', with his younger brother Abhinandan, who heads the House of Abhinandan Lodha.

Recently, their mother, Manju Lodha, intervened with heartfelt pleas for reconciliation through a letter dated February 21, 2025, which outlined six strict directives aimed at mending the rift between her sons. "I request you to stop all your disputes immediately," she wrote, reiteratively emphasizing the importance of familial unity and reconciliation amid their troubles.

History shows this dispute isn't new. It traces back to 2015 when Abhinandan separated from the Lodha Group to establish his own business, which led to the Amended Family Agreement of March 31, 2017. This legal document was intended to clarify the division of assets and ownership rights within the family. Under its terms, both siblings were explicitly barred from claiming any stakes or rights over each other's businesses, shareholdings, or intellectual property linked to the Lodha name. Yet, tensions reached new heights after the recent lawsuit initiated by Macrotech Developers.

The lawsuit, filed on January 20, 2025, accuses Abhinandan of trademark infringement for the alleged misuse of the 'Lodha' name, which Macrotech claims leads to public confusion and misrepresentation of their brand. The firm is seeking ₹5,000 crore (approximately $600 million) in damages. With the Bombay High Court currently overseeing the dispute and appointing former Supreme Court Justice R.V. Raveendran as mediator, the family's struggle is now under judicial scrutiny.

Manju Lodha’s letter reminded her sons of their cherished childhood together and the intimate bond they shared, once likened to the characters Ram and Lakshman from epic tales of unity. "When both of you were born, I experienced happiness which cannot be described," she reminisced. This personal touch highlights the stakes of the dispute, far beyond mere legalities.

Abhishek Lodha publicly acknowledged his mother's letter, expressing respect and commitment to the 2017 agreement. “I wish my younger brother, Abhinandan, all success in his business,” he remarked, urging him to reconcile his operations with the family agreement. He hoped Abhinandan would adopt distinct branding to avoid confusion with Macrotech's established identity. By adhering to their mother's directive, Abhishek aimed to preserve the family legacy and focus on future growth.

Conversely, Abhinandan's response sparked controversy as he criticized the public circulation of their family matters. "It is disappointing...this letter is being shared outside for ulterior motives and to create a false narrative," he contended. He maintained his private stance on family affairs, emphasizing the need for dignity and mutual commitment within the family.

The Lodha brothers’ dispute not only poses challenges within their family but also stirs public interest due to their wealthy lineage and their father's political stature as a Maharashtra cabinet minister. This multifaceted feud reflects themes of loyalty, duty, and the tensions wrought by familial obligations within the competitive world of business.

Despite the fraught atmosphere surrounding their legal battles, the opportunity for reconciliation remains, as Manju Lodha implores her sons to restore their ties, setting aside misunderstandings for the benefit of the family’s legacy and future. Whether they heed her call for unity could set the tone for their family's public image and business ventures going forward.

With mediation underway, the coming weeks will be pivotal for the Lodha brothers. Will they embrace their mother's wisdom and work amicably as partners once again, or will the divisions deepen, leading to prolonged corporate strife? The stakes are high, and resolving this bittersweet legacy may define not only their futures but also the heritage of the Lodha family.
