Lionel Messi Eager For 2026 World Cup Participation

Argentina eyes World Cup qualification as Messi considers his international future.

Argentina's national team coach Lionel Scaloni recently revealed Lionel Messi's eagerness to compete at the upcoming 2026 World Cup. While enthusiasm for the tournament is palpable among players, Scaloni noted during his interview with DSports, no definitive decision has been made yet about Messi's participation.

At 37 years old, Messi, who led Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup, remains central to La Albiceleste's ambitions. Scaloni emphasized the importance of time, stating, "The first thing to say is both he and his teammates are aware there is still a reasonable amount of time left, and the desire to play in the World Cup is something he has, just like everyone else." It is clear Messi's passion for the game continues to burn brightly, reflecting the emotions of his peers as well.

Scaloni's approach seems to affirm his concern for Messi's happiness. He added, "But to confirm it later, we need to let time pass and see how things play out. He knows very well what we think. What concerns me, the only thing I want, is for him to be happy." This insight shows how the coaching staff values player well-being alongside performance.

Meanwhile, Messi himself has struck a cautious tone when it pertains to his future with the national team. Speaking to TN Deportivo, he expressed motivation, saying, "Well, as I always say, I'm just starting the year. Honestly, I'm starting it feeling really, really excited and motivated. Hopefully, I can feel good as the year goes on." Such statements exemplify the optimism he carries as the 2026 World Cup approaches.

While the anticipation surrounding Messi's potential presence at the tournament dominates discussions, Scaloni also touched on another topic of concern—Angel Di Maria's retirement from international football. According to Scaloni, "From what he has communicated, it seems to be a definitive conclusion, and in the best possible manner. If he had scripted his own narrative, his book, or his football story, I doubt he could have envisioned a finer ending than what he achieved." Di Maria, another key player for Argentina, is expected to leave big shoes to fill.

Argentina’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup is also underway, with the CONMEBOL qualifiers resuming in March. Currently sitting at the top of the standings with 25 points, Argentina will be visiting Uruguay on March 21, followed by hosting Brazil at the Estadio Monumental on March 25. Strong performances in these matches could significantly secure their path to the World Cup.

Messi's potential involvement continues to hang as fans and teammates alike eagerly look forward to the World Cup. Scaloni’s comments reflect the positive sentiment surrounding Messi’s future, but for now, it remains dependent on how his physical condition evolves as the qualifiers approach.
