LINE Now Supports Android Sub-Devices For Enhanced Multitasking

Users can enjoy their LINE accounts on multiple devices, but with some limitations.

On March 17, 2025, the popular messaging service LINE announced exciting news for users who juggle multiple devices: Android smartphones can now be set up as 'sub-devices' to share the same LINE account. This feature, supported starting from version 15.3.0 of the app, integrates Android devices seamlessly with existing functionality previously available only on PCs and iPads.

LINE has long been trusted by users to manage their communications effectively. With this rollout, users can now use their iPhone or another main Android device for their primary LINE experience and register one Android smartphone as a sub-device. This expansion is particularly beneficial for those who find themselves owning both iPhones and Androids, enabling them to maintain the same chat history and contacts across devices.

Setting up the new sub-device feature is simple. To begin, users will need to modify the settings on their main device, enabling 'Login Permission' from the 'Settings' section followed by 'Account.' Following this, they must install the LINE app on the sub-Android device and select 'Sub-device.' A QR code from the main device appears on the screen, which the main device’s LINE application will scan. An authentication number will then be generated, allowing users to seamlessly access their accounts on both devices.

While there are commendably few hurdles to ease the transition, it's important for users to note the limitations associated with sub-devices. On the Android sub-device, certain functionalities are restricted. Users will not be able to transfer their LINE accounts, conduct age verification, back up chat histories, purchase paid items such as stamps or emoticons, or manage settings such as themes. Users will only be able to see the chat history for the past two weeks, meaning anything older won’t be accessible on the sub-device. LINE and Yahoo confirmed these restrictions, stating, "Sub-devices can be used almost as the main device, but some functions are limited.”

The introduction of dual-device functionality for Android smartphones also opens the gates for enhanced communication flexibility. Currently, users can operate three devices simultaneously: one Android device, one PC, and one iPad. Through this versatile setup, businesses and individuals alike can streamline communications, ensuring they're always reachable and organized.

While there are clear advantages, users who prefer iPhones need to be aware there are no plans to allow iPhones as sub-devices. LINE and Yahoo representatives explicitly mentioned, “at this time, there are no plans for support,” indicating future updates might occur to accommodate this demand. For users currently utilizing Android devices and PCs, this added flexibility is proving to be advantageous.

The benefits of having multiple platforms where users can engage without the overhead of needing multiple LINE accounts are significant. By using these devices interchangeably, they can manage their business and personal communications without missing out, tapping without restriction on the chat history and contacts available across those channels.

For any app users wondering if this might suit their needs, the prospect of setting up an Android smartphone as an additional device offers greater freedom. Android users can utilize two Android smartphones side by side, extending their capabilities and providing opportunities for those whose work entails constant communication. With LINE solidifying its presence as the go-to communication tool, this new sub-device feature also indicates they’re considering customer needs seriously.

Testing the new feature, one editorial team member logged their Android device as a sub-device alongside their iPhone 15 Pro as the main device. They were pleased to find all the necessary functions were available for use. The interactions were fluid, with chat messages being sent without any lag and notifications appearing as they normally would.

From this point forward, using LINE across devices has become simpler and more practical. This feature bridges the gaps between separate platforms, creating seamless communication routes regardless of which device is being used. It ensures people stay connected, whether they are at work or simply reaching out to friends.

LINE’s commitment to user integration highlights their intention to continually adapt and improve their platform as technology evolves. This new sub-device feature is just one example of how they strive to meet the diverse needs of their users. For those considering adding another layer of LINE functionality to their devices, this could be the ideal time to make the most of the expanded capabilities.
