Lindsey Vonn Makes Triumphant Return At St. Moritz Super-G

Inclement weather forces cancellation of second race after stunning performances by top competitors.

The anticipation was palpable as the 2024 St. Moritz Women's Ski World Cup unfolded over the weekend. Despite some setbacks, the event showcased remarkable athleticism and resilience, particularly with the return of legendary skier Lindsey Vonn.

On Saturday, the first Super-G event held under optimal conditions saw Austria's Cornelia Hütter clinch victory after executing her run flawlessly. She crossed the finish line with remarkable precision, dethroning previous champion Sofia Goggia from Italy and local favorite Lara Gut-Behrami from Switzerland, securing her second win of the season.

"It feels amazing to win again, especially here at St. Moritz where I’ve had great memories," Hütter stated, proud of her successive victories. Winning with authority against some of the best skiers not only bolstered her confidence but set the tone for her upcoming challenges this season.

But the excitement didn’t solely hinge on Hütter's impressive performance. The weekend inevitably revolved around the return of Lindsey Vonn, the former champion and Olympic gold medalist, marking her comeback nearly six years after her retirement. Competing with the start number 31, her remarkable achievement of finishing 14th sent waves of enthusiasm through the crowd.

"I just wanted to enjoy the experience, and I did. It was tough out there, but I loved every minute of it," Vonn proclaimed after her impressive showing. Her comeback, aided by advancements with her artificial knee, symbolized hope and inspiration for many, marking not just personal triumph but the endurance of the sport.

Unfortunately, the comeback story was overshadowed by nature’s unpredictability on Sunday. The scheduled second Super-G was thwarted by severe weather conditions characterized by high winds and poor visibility. After multiple delays, the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) announced the cancellation of the race, noting the weather was not only unstable but too dangerous for competitors.

"The conditions were not safe, and it was the right decision to cancel," said Hütter, following the announcement. Her sentiments were echoed by ÖSV head coach Roland Assinger, who expressed his concern over visibility alongside the unpredictable wind gusts, which could change dramatically within minutes, posing risks to the athletes.

The cancellation sparked discussions on social media, highlighting the unpredictable nature of sport and weather. Fans remarked on the unfortunate timing, especially after witnessing Vonn's inspiring return to the slopes. Many were eager to see how she would fare on her second outing but would have to wait, as the athletes would be taking due breaks before their next scheduled events.

The next stop for the speed women will be St. Anton, where both downhill and Super-G competitions are slated to commence after the New Year. The excitement of the World Cup season continues to build, with the ultimate highlight being the Ski World Championship set for February at Saalbach.

Reflecting on the event, organizers expressed their disappointment over the cancellation but maintained optimism about the quality of racing demonstrated on Saturday. The anticipation of the upcoming races and the competitive spirit of the athletes continue to resonate within the skiing community, as fans look forward to the return of competition.

Lindsey Vonn’s return may have added another dimension to the season, enhancing the narrative as she provides inspiration not just for competing athletes but also for countless fans who admire her resilience and passion for the sport. For now, all eyes remain glued to the 2024 St. Moritz Women’s Ski World Cup results and what lies beyond as athletes prepare to make their mark this season.
