Lincoln Maine Set For Major Energy Revitalization

Former paper mill site to house world’s largest energy storage facility to boost local economy and power grid reliability

The town of Lincoln, Maine, is set to become the site of the world’s largest multi-day energy storage facility, breathing new life and electricity potential back to the region. This ambitious project is being propelled by a substantial $147 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, aimed at developing advanced energy storage technology at the location of the now-defunct Lincoln Pulp and Paper Mill.

Initially closed down in 2015, the mill was once the heart of Lincoln’s economy, employing hundreds and providing livelihoods for many families. The closure was tough, particularly for the 130 workers who ended up jobless as the mill filed for bankruptcy. Now, with the announcement of the new energy project, there's hope for revitalization and job creation.

This project, dubbed "Power Up New England," aims to transform the Lincoln Technology Park through cutting-edge iron-air technology, which can store and discharge energy for over four days. This means, should there be disruptions to Maine’s power grid—a scenario becoming all too familiar with recent extreme weather events—this system would act like the state’s emergency backup, ensuring residents and businesses have access to energy.

Senators Angus King and Susan Collins, along with Governor Janet Mills and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, emphasized the strategic importance of this project. They noted how increasing storms have left countless Mainers without power for extended periods. The facility aims not to just store energy but also bolster local and regional grids, which will improve overall reliability and lower consumer costs.

The impact of this energy storage facility will stretch far beyond just power supply—it's anticipated to provide significant economic benefits to Lincoln, which saw its economy falter after the mill's closure. New jobs will emerge, not just from construction work but also operational roles once the facility is up and running. This is especially important for the rural town of Lincoln, where economic growth means stability for businesses and residents alike.

Richard Bronson, Lincoln's town manager, expressed optimism about the future, stating, "This award will enable us to welcome cutting-edge technology... by creating jobs, strengthening the electrical grid, and enabling the delivery of clean, reliable energy to power homes and businesses."

With such substantial investment and attention from state and federal leaders, Lincoln is becoming not only the focal point for energy storage innovation but also setting the stage for Maine to achieve its goal of installing 400 megawatts of energy storage by 2030. This initiative aligns seamlessly with efforts to embrace renewable energy resources, paving the way to incorporate offshore wind technology and other sustainable energy forms from the nearby coastal areas.

The construction of the facility is projected to start later this year, with hopes to be operational fairly soon thereafter. While uncertainties still linger, the momentum is building—both for local economic revival and the broader goal of cleaner energy sources throughout New England.

This exciting shift could signify greater energy independence and sustainability for Maine, moving the state closer to achieving its clean energy targets. The plans amount to more than just filling the shoes of the past; they look to the future, aiming to redefine what the state can offer both its residents and the environment.
