Liechtenstein has recently expanded its international presence by cementing two notable engagements – with NASA’s Artemis program and the support of local health initiatives aimed at promoting responsible drinking.
On December 20, 2023, Liechtenstein became the 52nd nation to join NASA's Artemis program, signing the Artemis Agreement at the agency's headquarters. This small European country has committed to supporting sustainable exploration and responsible missions as part of its agreement. NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy, who was present during the signing, expressed confidence about the collaboration. Parallel to its international engagements, Liechtenstein is making strides on the home front with the introduction of the "Dry January" campaign, aimed at encouraging residents to rethink their alcohol consumption. Following its successful inception in the UK, the campaign will partner with local organizations such as Addiction Prevention Liechtenstein and the Bureau of Social Services. Starting January 2025, this initiative seeks to improve both physical and mental well-being by promoting alcohol abstinence for the month. Martin Birnbaumer-Onder from the Bureau of Social Services noted, "Our vision is to raise awareness about conscious alcohol consumption." Instead of focusing solely on abstinence, the campaign promotes it as an enjoyable and beneficial experience, helping individuals assess their drinking habits without judgment.
The campaign will utilize humor and playful messaging such as "Rock dry through January" and "Dance sober for good romances" to attract public interest and participation. Liechtenstein's health survey indicates alcohol consumption remains prevalent, with nearly one-third of the population drinking regularly. This program aims to counteract the normalization of excessive drinking by offering positive alternatives and challenges.
