Liam Lawson Promoted To Red Bull Racing For 2025

New Zealand driver takes Sergio Perez’s seat to partner with Max Verstappen.

New Zealand's Liam Lawson has officially been handed the opportunity of a lifetime as he takes the seat alongside Max Verstappen at Red Bull Racing for the 2025 Formula One season. This pivotal promotion follows the termination of Sergio Perez's contract after the 34-year-old driver's disappointing performance during the past season.

The announcement came on December 19, 2024, highlighting Red Bull’s strategy for future competitiveness following Perez's lackluster display, where he finished eighth overall, turning the constructors' title over to rivals McLaren. "To be announced as a Red Bull Racing driver is a lifelong dream for me," said Lawson, reflecting on his childhood aspiration to reach the pinnacle of motorsport. "This is something I’ve wanted and worked toward since I was eight years old." Lawson's career has seen its share of challenges and triumphs, from his days racing on the karting circuits of New Zealand to his debut with Scuderia AlphaTauri during the 2023 season.

Lawson joins Red Bull after demonstrating his potential through impactful performances with the sister team, Racing Bulls, over the past two years. With only 11 Grand Prix races under his belt, Lawson has already made significant strides, showcasing his ability with commendable finishes, including scoring points at both the United States and Singapore Grands Prix. Team principal Christian Horner remarked, "Liam’s performances over the course of his two stints with Racing Bulls have demonstrated not only his capability of delivering strong results but also he is not afraid to mix it with the best." This equity earned him the nod over Yuki Tsunoda, who, though more experienced, wasn't perceived to have the same competitive edge as Lawson.

The choice to promote Lawson over Tsunoda is underpinned by Horner’s belief in his adaptability and pressure management skills. Tsunoda has proven to be quick but has likewise faced criticism for his temperament on the track, with many worrying about how he'd handle the pressures of being Verstappen’s teammate. "When it came down to it, we felt Liam has the right characteristics and strength of character to deal with the pressure of being alongside Max," Horner stated, alluding to Tsunoda’s emotional responses during races.

Lawson's ascent to this elite position is not merely the product of Red Bull’s internal evaluations but reflects his family's sacrifices as well. With his parents even selling their house to support his racing career, Lawson is adamant about honoring their labor. "My parents and siblings have sacrificed so much for me to be here. This is as much their achievement as it is mine," Lawson expressed, underlining the emotional stakes of his promotion.

For Lawson, the excitement reveals not only personal fulfillment but also the challenges and expectations of racing with one of the F1's leading figures. Verstappen, regarded as one of the greatest drivers of all time with his four championship titles, presents both inspiration and pressure. Lawson noted, "I am super excited to work alongside Max and learn from him. I can’t wait to get going!" His eagerness to learn and grow as and alongside Verstappen marks him as focused and determined for the upcoming season.

The legacy of previous drivers at Red Bull is notable, as Horner highlighted the trend of promoting talent from their Junior program—a tradition continued with Lawson. This policy not only preserves the team’s competitive edge but also fosters growth within. Interviews with insiders have suggested Lawson’s calm, competent manner will suit the team’s needs well, especially considering the dynamics with Verstappen.

Meanwhile, Perez's exit opens questions about the direction of his own career. Having contributed significantly to Red Bull’s successes over the years, including aiding them to Constructors' Championships and achieving personal milestones, Perez has been acknowledged as both valued and bittersweet history. Horner expressed appreciation, stating, "Checo has been a fantastic member of this team... but he’s decided to take a bit of time out, take a sabbatical from Formula 1, and we are sad to see him go."

At just 22, Lawson carries the dreams not only of himself but of his family, team, and fans. His goal for the upcoming season is clear—to help Red Bull regain its status as Constructors’ champions. "Every driver’s dream is to win a World Championship, and I intend to contribute to making our team successful," Lawson shared. With his career just beginning, the expectations placed on him will likely be immense, but his first steps alongside one of the sport’s most successful figures seem promising.

Lawson's story—from humble beginnings to the heights of motorsport—encapsulates the essence of determination and resilience. With 2025 on the horizon, all eyes will be on the young New Zealander as he prepares to make his mark at Oracle Red Bull Racing alongside Max Verstappen.
