Liam Cooper Treats Leeds Fans To Free Beers

Former captain surprises supporters by putting £1,000 behind the bar at local pub.

On New Year’s Day, former Leeds United captain Liam Cooper surprised fans at The Old Peacock pub by treating them to free beers, putting £1,000 behind the bar for eager supporters. His unannounced visit became the highlight of the match day as fans gathered for the game against Blackburn Rovers.

The Old Peacock, located directly opposite Elland Road, is known to be the go-to spot for Leeds fans, particularly on match days. The pub, with roots dating back to 1963 when it replaced another establishment, has become synonymous with the club’s vibrant community spirit. When Cooper walked in, staff were initially taken aback, with barmaid Dawn being the first to recognize him.

“Dawn was behind the bar and she told us she had thought it was Liam Cooper and asked him to come behind the bar for a picture,” recalled Billy, a staff member at the pub. It was then Cooper made his generous gesture, offering £1,000 for drinks, which sent patrons "mental." Beer cans were handed out as fans celebrated, creating an electrifying atmosphere—one reminiscent of Cooper’s decade-long tenure at the club.

“They absolutely loved it, they went mental. He still has got a home here, it's like he never left,” Billy added, illustrating the deep connection Cooper has maintained with Leeds supporters even after moving to CSKA Sofia to play in the Bulgarian First League.

The emotional ties between players and fans were on full display during Cooper’s surprise visit. This isn’t the first time former Leeds players have reached out to their fan base at The Old Peacock; Luke Ayling, another fan favorite, previously offered £500 behind the bar during his farewell to supporters.

Built more than half a century ago, The Old Peacock symbolizes the passionate allegiance of Leeds United's supporters. It continues to thrive as a hub for fans to come together, reminisce, and share their experiences around their beloved club. With former players like Cooper and Ayling showing up at the pub, it not only shortens the gap between the pitch and the bar but reinforces the bond between players and their loyal fans.

Cooper’s visit exemplified more than just generosity; it showcased his lasting impact at Leeds United. Supporters, who cheered his name during matches, now raised their glasses to honor him and the memories created over his ten years with the club.

This relationship flares with emotions, nostalgia, and gratitude, one Cooper seems to cherish as much as his fans do. The camaraderie found at The Old Peacock serves as both anchor and launchpad for memories steeped in devotion and passion for the club and its players.

The Leeds United narrative stretches beyond the turf, echoing through pubs and bars where the heart of the club truly beats. Through gestures like Cooper's, the legend of Leeds United continues to thrive, living on through the fans’ cheers, players’ gestures, and shared moments over a pint. This spirit will undoubtedly linger as the club embarks on new ventures and stories, forever rooted in community, football, and unforgettable experiences.

With Cooper's unexpected charity on New Year's Day, fans were reminded yet again of the unique bond shared with players—a relationship built on mutual respect, emotional resonance, and, of course, the occasional free beer.
