LG Energy Solution Partners With Qualcomm To Transform Battery Management

Collaborative efforts aim to advance battery technology and energy storage solutions by integrating advanced systems.

LG Energy Solution Ltd. has officially partnered with U.S. semiconductor giant Qualcomm Technologies Inc. to commercialize groundbreaking battery management system (BMS) diagnostic solutions. This collaboration was announced on Monday and aims to integrate Qualcomm’s state-of-the-art Snapdragon chip within electric vehicles, enhancing the technology's accessibility for automakers.

This innovative approach marks significant progress since LG Energy Solution and Qualcomm previously unveiled their intentions to co-develop next-generation BMS diagnostic solutions early this year. A dedicated task force has since been established to spearhead this research and development effort.

“The partnership has proven the excellence of LG Energy Solution’s BMS technology and the synergies achieved through collaboration with Qualcomm,” remarked a representative from LG Energy Solution. “Through the technology-sharing and validation process, we have confirmed the superiority of our BMS solutions and decided to move forward with full-scale commercialization.”

The newly developed BMS is the first to fully utilize high-performance system-on-chip (SoC) computing capabilities, differentiable from earlier systems which relied on lower-spec hardware. This advancement enables enhanced diagnostic functions and quick detection of anomalies, including potential fire hazards. Compared to existing BMS systems, the new solution provides significantly more data collection and is built to manage degradation diagnostics with 80 times greater sophistication, thanks to its advanced computational capacity.

The upgraded algorithms are now capable of predicting battery capacity retention and delivering detailed performance indicators, particularly concerning the components such as the anode and cathode. Notably, the software provides real-time functionality without necessitating external server connections, empowering vehicle operators to conduct diagnostic assessments onboard.

Further solidifying its position, LG Energy Solution has announced its commitment to large-scale energy storage projects via its recent contract with U.S.-based Excelsior Energy Capital. This deal stipulates the production and delivery of 7.5 GWh energy storage systems (ESS), slated to commence in 2026. The endeavor highlights LGES's dedication to providing clean energy solutions and enhancing its expansive reach within the growing renewable energy sector.

With this supply agreement, LG Energy Solution positions itself strategically to meet increasing market demands for energy storage solutions. The U.S. division of LG Energy Solution will manufacture the ESS units at its domestic facilities, ensuring timely delivery beginning April 2026.

LGES's representatives underscored their distinct advantage, possessing over 8,000 patents related to BMS technology, and asserting their safety diagnostic detection rates exceeding 90 percent, coupled with industry-leading degradation diagnostic error rates around 1 percent. This significant edge allows the company not only to lead but also to innovate continuously within the battery technology field.

Continuing its trend of securing lucrative contracts, LGES previously signed another agreement to provide 8 GWh of ESS with Terra-Gen Power Holdings II, LLC., contributing to the sustainable energy movement. Together, these partnerships and advancements underline LG Energy Solution’s unwavering ambition to drive innovation within both battery technology and energy management systems.

“Through the process of technology sharing and validation, we have demonstrated the excellence of our BMS technology through synergy with Qualcomm Technologies. Now, we are officially embarking on the development for commercialization,” added the LG Energy Solution official, emphasizing the importance of these initiatives for the future.

Looking forward, LG Energy Solution remains committed to leading the way in battery management and energy storage solutions, which are increasingly pivotal as global markets shift toward electrification and sustainable energy initiatives.
