Lexa Opens Up About Daughter's Death And Pre-Eclampsia Struggles

The singer recounts her heart-wrenching experience after losing her newborn and battling serious health issues during pregnancy.

Lexa and her husband, Ricardo Vianna, spoke candidly about the heartbreaking death of their daughter, Sofia, during an interview on the program Fantástico aired on Sunday, February 23. The pop singer revealed chilling details of her struggle with pre-eclampsia, stating, "Beirei a morte tentando salvar minha filha" (I came close to death trying to save my daughter).

Sofia was born on February 2 but tragically passed away just three days later. Lexa had been hospitalized since January 21, battling severe complications due to pre-eclampsia. Recalling her ordeal, she described intense physical pain and emotional turmoil as she fought to keep her baby safe. "I felt strong stomach pain, headaches, and my hand wouldn't close anymore. My liver began to fail; there was nowhere else to turn," she lamented during the interview.

Lexa had always envisioned this pregnancy as deeply cherished and strategically planned, having adhered religiously to her prenatal appointments. Her daughter was born with multiple health issues as Lexa's own health deteriorated. "She was tiny but beautiful, born with kidneys compromised and altered pressure," she recounted.

During the interview, Lexa shared her experience of being told by her doctor, "Na medicina, a gente sempre vai escolher a mãe" (in medicine, we will always choose the mother). Despite the grave warning, Lexa expressed her determination to fight for her daughter's life, indicating her willingness to go to extremes to protect Sofia.

At 24 weeks pregnant, Lexa's health took a precarious turn as she developed the severe form of pre-eclampsia known as HELLP syndrome, putting both mother and child at risk. "I was fighting week by week, knowing the longer Sofia stayed inside me, the greater her chances of survival would be," she expressed.

She spent 17 days hospitalized, including several days in intensive care, before the emergency delivery of Sofia was deemed necessary. Approaching the end of her pregnancy, Lexa had to reconcile the harsh reality of her conditions, indicating how difficult the situation was. "I did everything I could...sometimes we want to blame ourselves somehow, but I think: there was nothing more to be done." This powerful statement reveals Lexa’s immense grief and turmoil, reflecting on the depths of her lost expectations.

Ricardo, visibly moved, spoke to the emotional strain of the situation. “What hurts me the most as a husband and father is being unable to do anything. Seeing our daughter under treatment and knowing my wife was fighting for her life was overwhelming,” he shared, encapsulating the shared sorrow between the couple.

Though both are devastated, Lexa believes there is light at the end of the tunnel. She stated, "Eu creio, eu creio mesmo que coisas boas acontecerão" (I truly believe good things will happen), expressing her hopes for the future amid unspeakable grief.

This tragic experience leads the couple to navigate the grieving process together, strengthening their bond even as they face each day filled with tears and memories of the very short life of Sofia.

Describing her loss, Lexa reflects, "Essa dor, a impressão que eu tenho é que não vai ter um dia da minha vida que eu não vá chorar" (This pain, the impression I have is there won't be a day of my life when I won't cry). She acknowledges the lengthy road of healing she has yet to travel, indicating her desire to begin again and find joy.
