Lewis Hamilton Plays Key Role In F1 Movie's Creation

The upcoming film aims to capture the thrill of F1 racing, thanks to Hamilton and the team’s excitement.

Lewis Hamilton has been hailed by director Joseph Kosinski for his "instrumental" role in the upcoming F1 movie, which stars Brad Pitt and Damson Idris. Set for release in June 2025, the film narrates the comeback story of Sonny Hayes, played by Pitt, and rookie Joshua Pearce, portrayed by Idris, at the fictional APXGP team. With Hamilton acting as both producer and driving instructor, his influence on the film's realistic portrayal of Formula 1 racing has been significant.

According to Kosinski, having Hamilton on set was pivotal for the movie's authenticity. He recounted the initial training sessions with Pitt and Idris, where he, Hamilton, and the two actors tested their driving skills. "The first day was really fun. It was me, Brad and Lewis Hamilton at the track together, all of us jumping in cars and driving each other around," Kosinski shared. He stressing Hamilton's eagerness to assess Pitt's driving proficiency, stating, "What we learned and what Lewis was really interested [in] was seeing, did Brad know how to drive?"

Pitt’s impressive performance behind the wheel quickly erased any doubts. Kosinski remarked, "Lewis was very happy to discover was Brad had a lot of just natural ability right from the start," noting Pitt's natural talent made for thrilling scenes throughout the production. This level of authenticity is something Kosinski aims for the audience to recognize. “When you see Brad driving, that's not acting,” he said, emphasizing the serious nature of the drivers' work and the film's depiction of it.

The director also praised Hamilton’s contributions to the narrative. "Lewis was instrumental not only in the technical aspects but also at the real formative stage of the movie, formulating this narrative," Kosinski elaborated. Knowing firsthand the unique pressures of being both a rookie and seasoned driver, Hamilton provided unparalleled insights to shape the characters and their motivations. "He has seen it all. So his perspective on shaping the narrative of these two characters...was really helpful. We couldn't have made this film without him,” Kosinski stated.

Adding another layer to the excitement surrounding the movie, several F1 team bosses expressed their enthusiasm following the release of the film’s latest trailer. Many believe it can replicate the “transformative” success of the Netflix series Drive to Survive, which has brought dramatic changes to the sport's appeal. James Vowles, Williams team principal, noted, "Netflix has been transformative – and it’s not because they are filming over there in the corner. They really have transformed who we are as a sport and where we are today.”

Vowles expressed optimism about the film drawing newer and larger audiences. “From what I’ve seen...they’re fundamentally trying to replicate our sport in film. That’s what I connected to when I watched it,” he said. Vasseur echoed this sentiment, asserting the film would attract more female and younger viewers, aligning with the change seen through Netflix's coverage. "If you go back to 2018 or 2019, F1 was absolutely not in the same shape," said Ferrari’s Fred Vasseur. "Netflix helped us massively on thisjourney, and I hope this movie will do the same because it’s the best way to attract new audiences.”

Andy Cowell of Aston Martin voiced support for the film as well, noting, “The work Netflix has done has made these two celebrities!” highlighting the recent methods of entertainment engagement through events and the series. He teased something special, stating, "I think there’s a preview coming up for the film," indicating excitement is high among the teams.

Despite being set for release next year, anticipation continues to grow, especially as the first Grand Prix of 2025 will take place soon in Melbourne, Australia. The film not only seeks to entertain but also aims to deepen the connection between the fans and the beloved sport of F1. The collaboration between Hamilton, known as the sport's star figure, and the creative minds behind the film reflects the desire to create something truly remarkable for both fans and newcomers alike.

With the film on the horizon and the first race of the season just around the corner, both the excitement for the film and the new F1 season are building, promising to bring new energy to the world of Formula 1 racing.
