Let’s Dance Day Invites Everyone To Join The Celebration

Communities unite through dance activities and classes across the nation, promoting health and wellbeing.

Let's Dance Day is set to light up the nation on March 2, 2025, bringing together communities through the joy of dance. Initiated by broadcaster Angela Rippon CBE and supported by the Sport and Recreation Alliance, the event aims to make dance accessible for people of all ages, fitness levels, and experiences. Over 50,000 dance teachers and organizations will open their doors nationwide, inviting the public to participate enthusiastically.

The festivities will take place at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, where guests can enjoy various dance styles from ballroom to classical Indian. 'Our historic venue has been a catalyst for joy through dance for generations,' said Michael Williams, Managing Director of Winter Gardens. 'Let’s Dance Day perfectly aligns with our mission to make dance accessible to all.'

Rippon believes dance can transform lives, noting, "Let's Dance Day isn't just about performance – it's about discovering how dance can improve our lives." With structured programs aimed at different demographics including seniors, teens, and those with health challenges, the day boasts specialized dance activities to cater to everyone.

Meanwhile, Ceilidh Cornwall is also getting involved from March 3 to March 7, offering free classes for everyone wanting to try their hand at ceilidh dancing. To book your place, you simply need to send them your class preference and group size. This initiative aims to display the community spirit and the benefits dance can bring to mental health.

Angela Rippon, inspired by her experiences on 'Strictly Come Dancing,' founded the Let's Dance campaign to showcase the extensive benefits of dance. She emphasizes the campaign's mission: "Dance is the perfect exercise to improve the health and wellbeing of mind and body, regardless of age or physical condition. And it’s also great for meeting new people and beating isolation and loneliness." The initiative reflects the growing recognition of dance as not just art, but also as effective exercise.

Participatory events are pivotal to the campaign's success. For example, Swing Bums, Trinity's swing dance student organization, encourages new and experienced dancers to engage through social dance events and open rehearsals. Katherine Willcockson, president of Swing Bums, said, "It’s just about getting people together, playing music, and dancing. It’s really fun to see people who have never danced before." This inclusivity helps participants build confidence and create friendships.

Swing Bums is well-known for its laid-back environment, which encourages attendees to relax and enjoy dancing. According to Cate Shaffer, member of Swing Bums, dancing has provided her not only with skills but also with self-acceptance, saying, "It has helped me grow more comfortable with my body and confidence."
Continuing with the spirit of togetherness, the Let's Dance Day festivities will feature specific sessions aimed at those living with conditions such as Parkinson's or recovering from strokes and cancer. This commitment highlights the campaign's dedication to well-being through dance.

Rippon's enthusiasm for the project's impact is palpable: "From improving physical health to boosting mental wellbeing and creating social connections, dance has the power to transform lives at any age." The day promises to break down barriers and eliminate the stigma surrounding dance.

Attendees at Ceilidh Cornwall have already begun to sing praises about their experiences, with one participant saying, "After the class, I felt so uplifted for the whole week." The positive mental boost from participating exemplifies how dance serves as more than just exercise; it fosters joy and community.

Importantly, ripples of support for Let's Dance Day have reached the healthcare community, with initiatives like the Institute of Social Prescribing working on implementing dance as a prescribed method to address various health conditions. This innovative approach seeks to reinforce the notion of dance not only as recreation, but also as medicine.

The Winter Gardens event underlines this synergy, promoting the transformative power of dance as it embraces participants from all walks of life. The array of diverse dance styles showcased at the event serves to highlight how anyone can find their place within the dance community.

The core message of Let's Dance Day will resonate throughout its festivities, culminating not just in the celebration of dance but also instilling lifelong connections between individuals and communities. Attendees will leave feeling inspired, uplifted, and, most critically, connected to one another.
