After 18 months of renovation, the Secours Catholique day center, L'Escale, reopened its doors on Friday, March 14, 2025. Located at the end of Avenue Joffre, the day center is now ready to support those facing hardship with various services aimed at fostering social inclusion and wellbeing.
Built at the cost of approximately 800,000 €, with 80% of the funding sourced from the prefecture via the France Relance fund and the remainder provided by the departmental council and the local municipality for operational costs, L'Escale is seen as more than just a refuge. Florence Radix-Bidart, the territorial coordinator, emphasized the importance of this project, stating, "On essaie de trouver des solutions, avec de l’aide alimentaire et des solutions pour régler les factures..." (We try to find solutions through food aid and ways to address bills).
The center now features various amenities, including a bistro serving refreshments, hygiene facilities with separate areas for men and women, and opportunities for personal and medical consultations. L'Escale also hosts second-hand shops and boutiques aimed at encouraging social mixing. The sale of donated items not only helps keep costs low for those in need but also generates revenue to keep the operation running.
With around 50 volunteers currently assisting, L'Escale aims to double this number to increase operational hours, functioning at least half the day each day. A new volunteer, Matthieu, shared his intentions to invigorate the space by engaging with the community, noting, "Ça me plaît d’aider, d’amener un peu de dynamisme aussi parmi les bénévoles..." (I enjoy helping and bringing some energy among the volunteers). His enthusiasm reflects the collective spirit driving L'Escale forward.
Additional activities include French as a Foreign Language (FLE) courses for about 50 learners, highlighting the center’s comprehensive approach to support. According to Chantal, who manages personalized support, L'Escale is committed to ensuring individuals' rights are addressed and offering direction toward other necessary resources.
Despite the challenges faced during the prolonged closure, which led to reduced attendance from homeless individuals and those requiring support, the warmth and utility of the center have rallied the community. An anonymous beneficiary stated, "Ça manquait un lieu comme ça" (We needed a place like this), echoing the sentiments of many who rely on L'Escale as more than just a service but as a place of belonging.
Besides human-centered support, L'Escale is also stepping up for the four-legged companions of the homeless. A partnership with the veterinary school of Toulouse will facilitate monthly veterinary care for stray animals, allowing students to provide necessary services and fostering additional community involvement.
Overall, the renewed L'Escale is more than just the reopening of a facility—it is the revitalization of hope, community, and support. Everyone involved is eager to resume operations, focusing on food security, mental health, and assisting individuals through complex challenges. With the enhancements made to the center and increased volunteer involvement, L'Escale is poised to become the beacon of temporary shelter and revitalization it was always meant to be, tackling not only immediate needs but also long-term well-being for all who cross its threshold.
