On March 4, 2025, the regional Legislative Assembly of Leningrad celebrated "Women’s Day," continuing its traditional observance just before the International Women's Day on March 8. This year marked the 18th roundtable meeting focused on the topic "Women in Modern Society," where parliament deputies converged to discuss their work and to honor the active women of the 47th region.
Chairman of the Legislative Assembly, Sergei Bebenin, opened the meeting by recognizing the substantial contributions of women across various facets of public life. He noted their efforts in volunteering and providing assistance to those in need, particularly large families. Bebenin emphasized the importance of these contributions, stating, "Women play a pivotal role in shaping our society’s values and priorities, enriching our communities through their compassion and commitment."
Alongside Bebenin, Vice Speaker Tatyana Tyurina welcomed the attendees, referring to them as "dear friends" and taking the opportunity to share insights about the work conducted within the parliamentary team. The discussions encompassed measures of social support for families, protection of motherhood and childhood, and the need to preserve traditional values within society.
The Chairman of the Committee on Social Protection of the Population of the Leningrad Region, Anastasia Tolmacheva, provided detailed insights about the available social support measures aimed at assisting families. She outlined the structural aspects of these programs, aiming to empower family units and reinforce community ties.
Addressing the meeting as well, Alla Levina, head of the regional branch of the "Committee of Mothers of Soldiers of the Fatherland," spoke about the efforts to support families of soldiers participating in various military operations. She highlighted the collaboration between military units, medical establishments, and charitable organizations aimed at providing assistance where needed. Levina pointed out, “It is our duty to stand by those who serve our nation and their families who bear the sacrifices.”
Commissioner for Children's Rights and Chairman of the Leningrad Regional Branch of the Union of Women of Russia, Tatyana Tolstova, reiterated the importance of addressing demographic challenges through family support. Her remarks served to underline the necessity of ensuring adequate resources and assistance for large families, which she argued are fundamental to the community’s stability.
Deputy Anna Khmeleva, another key speaker at the event, focused on the balance between motherhood and professional aspirations. She argued for the positive impact of women’s economic participation on family stability, noting, "The economic activity of young mothers brings resilience to families, as dual incomes contribute to overall well-being." Her perspective underscored the shift toward recognizing and valuing women’s roles not just at home, but also within the professional sphere.
Concluding the roundtable, all women attendees were presented with bouquets, signifying respect and recognition of their roles regardless of their social standing. The gesture encapsulated the spirit of the event and served as a reminder of the importance of celebrating women’s achievements across society.
This event, praised by both attendees and speakers, reiterates the commitment of local leaders to advocate for women's rights and to continually support families through effective policies and social initiatives. The tradition of gathering to honor women has proven to be not only meaningful, but also instrumental in fostering community and dialogue about pressing social issues.
