Leicester Father Kills Son, Then Himself During Visit

Tragic murder-suicide leaves community mourning the loss of young Timotej Borrett.

A tragic incident on the outskirts of Leicester has left the community reeling following the deaths of five-year-old Timotej Borrett and his father, Lee Borrett, during what should have been an ordinary visit. The two were found dead at Lee Borrett's residence on July 24, 2023, after the child was set to spend time with his father for the first unsupervised visit since the couple's separation.

A senior coroner, Catherine Mason, addressed the court about the events of the fateful evening, highlighting the decision made for Timotej to reside with his mother, Veronika Phillips, but to visit his father three times weekly. On this occasion, Timotej was meant to return home by 7 PM. When Ms. Phillips grew concerned about her son's whereabouts, she initiated contact with Lee Borrett but received no replies.

After calling the police at 7:34 PM, Ms. Phillips went to her ex-partner's home accompanied by her new partner. Upon arrival, they found the residence with curtains drawn, raising alarms. The situation turned dire when Lee Borrett's brother entered the home, only to rush outside moments later seeking assistance. It was within those walls of Hopyard Close, Leicester, where the unfathomable was found—Timotej lying unconscious on his bed.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the little boy was pronounced dead at 9:07 PM, just minutes after help arrived. Initial investigations indicated Timotej had succumbed to injuries caused by airway obstruction, and it was concluded his father had acted unlawfully, resulting not only in his son's death but also leading to his own.

Coroner Mason emphasized the responsibility Lee Borrett held for his son’s death, stating, "Lee Borrett carried out an intentional act with the intended action being his own death, so the appropriate conclusion is suicide." The circumstances surrounding the tragedy unfolded during what should have been an innocent evening together, plagued instead by overwhelming despair.

Veronika Phillips shared her grief, stating, "Our beloved Timotej was a light in our lives, full of curiosity, kindness, and wonder. At just five years old, he had a fascination with planets, often gazing at the stars and asking the most amazing questions. His love for countries and his ability to name over 180 flags amazed everyone who met him. Timotej had a heart so big it could hold the whole world—he was always sharing, always understandable, and always full of love." These heartfelt words captured not just the legacy of Timotej, but the depth of loss felt by all who knew him.

The community continues to grapple with the emotional fallout from this heartbreaking event, as police and investigators worked methodically to ascertain the facts. Detective Chief Inspector Mark Sinski noted, "This has been a devastating, heart-breaking and incredibly traumatic incident and investigation. My thoughts remain with the families involved at this time and I thank them for their bravery and support during our inquiries and throughout the inquest hearing." His remarks highlighted the collective empathy felt toward the family and community.

Details revealed during the investigation included Lee Borrett had scheduled emails indicating he had intentions about communicating with his sister, reflecting a troubling premonition of his actions. Courts confirmed no third-party involvement, directing the tragic responsibility solely to the father.

This whirling tragedy speaks volumes about the struggles faced by families when custodial arrangements change, and the devastating consequences when mental health challenges intertwine with familial disputes. It serves as solemn reminder of the urgent need for support services for families undergoing similar challenges.
