Lego Announces Official X Files Set For 2026 Release

The winning design from the 90s Throwback challenge brings Mulder, Scully, and iconic scenes to brick form with a 2,020-piece set

LEGO fans and sci-fi enthusiasts alike have reason to celebrate as the beloved 1990s TV show The X-Files is set to return—not on television, but as an official LEGO Ideas set. Announced on June 25, 2025, the winning entry from LEGO’s Build Your Nostalgia – 90s Throwback challenge is a meticulously crafted tribute titled The X-Files: The Truth Is Out There, designed by LEGO Ideas user Brent Waller, known online as WetWired. This exciting development marks the culmination of a decade-long journey for Waller and promises to bring the iconic paranormal series to life in brick form.

The competition, which invited fans to create nostalgic LEGO builds inspired by the 1990s, was split into two categories based on set size: larger builds ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 pieces, and smaller builds between 200 and 1,000 pieces. The winner of the larger category was Waller’s 2,020-piece set dedicated to The X-Files, while the smaller category was won by Pidelium’s charming Wallace & Gromit motorbike and sidecar display.

Waller’s design is a two-story marvel combining two distinct yet iconic scenes from the series. The upper level depicts a forest UFO encounter, complete with a “Grey” alien beaming down from a spaceship, while the lower level recreates Fox Mulder’s basement FBI office, famously adorned with the “I Want To Believe” poster. This clever vertical layout encapsulates the show's blend of the mysterious and the mundane, inviting builders to piece together the global conspiracy, brick by brick.

The set includes minifigures of key characters spanning the show’s rich history: Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, Assistant Director Walter Skinner, the enigmatic Syndicate Leader, the eerie Eugene Tooms, the Jersey Devil, and the ever-mysterious “Grey” alien. Fans will appreciate the attention to detail and the many Easter eggs embedded throughout the build, such as Tooms lurking in vents, capturing the spirit of the cult series.

Brent Waller’s path to seeing his creation become an official LEGO set has been anything but straightforward. He originally crafted custom minifigures of Mulder and Scully back in 2015 and promoted an earlier submission titled The X-Files: I Want To Believe in 2021. That 650-piece playset garnered significant support, reaching the 10,000-vote threshold required for LEGO Ideas consideration, but was ultimately rejected for being “too mature” for the platform. Undeterred, Waller returned with an updated and expanded submission that has now triumphed.

LEGO Ideas has confirmed that development is underway, with the company collaborating closely with Waller to refine the set into a stable, enjoyable, and market-ready product. However, fans should temper their excitement with patience, as the final product is expected to hit shelves no sooner than late 2026 or early 2027. Pricing details remain under wraps, though the complexity and piece count suggest a premium price point.

Alongside The X-Files, the smaller category winner from the 90s Throwback challenge, Pidelium’s Wallace & Gromit build, is also moving toward production. This set captures the beloved duo riding their motorbike and sidecar from the classic claymation short A Close Shave. Unlike the minifigure-focused X-Files set, Wallace & Gromit is designed as a detailed display piece, faithfully replicating Aardman’s distinctive rounded style using sloped and smooth LEGO tiles. While it lacks minifigures, it offers fans a charming tribute that fits neatly on a shelf.

These winning sets join an impressive roster of upcoming LEGO Ideas projects, including highly anticipated builds based on Godzilla, The Goonies, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Tintin. LEGO continues to demonstrate its commitment to celebrating pop culture across generations, offering fans new ways to engage with their favorite stories and characters through the timeless medium of LEGO bricks.

The announcement has sparked excitement across the LEGO community and among The X-Files devotees worldwide. After airing its first episode in 1993 and running for 11 seasons, the show became a global phenomenon, influencing a generation of sci-fi and paranormal storytelling. Now, with this official LEGO set, fans can relive the thrill of the unexplained and the quest for truth in a hands-on, creative way.

As LEGO and WetWired work together to finalize the set, enthusiasts can look forward to more updates and sneak peeks throughout the development process. While the final design may differ slightly from the original fan submission, the essence of the series’ atmosphere and characters is sure to remain intact.

Whether you’re a longtime believer in the paranormal or a LEGO collector eager for your next build, The X-Files: The Truth Is Out There set promises to be a captivating addition to any collection. And as the countdown to its release begins, one can’t help but wonder—what other secrets will LEGO uncover next?
