Legendary KROQ DJ Jed The Fish Dies At 69

A pioneering voice in alternative radio, Gould's influence shaped music culture in Los Angeles and beyond.

Jed "The Fish" Gould, the legendary Los Angeles radio DJ who spent 34 years at KROQ-FM, died on Monday, April 14, 2025, at the age of 69 from lung cancer. The news of his passing was announced on his social media accounts, which stated, "At 6 a.m. on April 14, 2025, the world lost one of its most unique and brilliant personalities. Jed The Fish passed peacefully away in his beloved home, and the world will never be the same."

Born Edwin Jed Fish Gould III on July 15, 1955, Gould joined KROQ in 1978 as its musical director, during a time when punk rock and new wave were gaining momentum in Los Angeles. His influence at the station helped transform it from a struggling FM outlet into a leading voice in the alternative rock scene. He moved to the afternoon drive-time slot in 1985, where he became a staple of the Los Angeles airwaves.

During his time at KROQ, Gould was instrumental in introducing numerous bands to the local audience, often before they gained national recognition. His eclectic taste in music included early support for now-iconic bands such as Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Duran Duran, and many others. His unique style and humor made him a beloved figure among listeners.

Gould was not only known for his on-air persona but also for his innovative segments like "Catch of the Day," where he highlighted new music with his trademark irreverence. His laid-back voice and offbeat sense of humor resonated with fans, making his shows a cultural touchstone for a generation.

In addition to his work at KROQ, Gould hosted the nationally syndicated radio show "Out of Order," which featured America’s top alt-rock songs played out of order. He was recognized for his contributions to radio, being named Billboard's Modern Rock Personality of the Year in both 1997 and 1999.

After leaving KROQ in 2012, Gould continued to work in radio at KCSN from 2012 to 2018 and had a brief stint at KLOS in Los Angeles. In 2019, he returned to KROQ’s HD channel to host a Sunday night show.

Throughout his career, Gould's influence extended beyond radio. He was involved in various artistic endeavors, including visual arts and music production. He dabbled in acting, appearing in films like "Surf II" and "Night Angel," and was featured in the documentary "Mayor of the Sunset Strip." His creative spirit was evident in the unique sculptures and installations he created at his home.

Gould's legacy is marked by his ability to shape the musical landscape of Los Angeles and beyond. His friends and colleagues remember him fondly as a pioneer in alternative radio. "A legend of the airwaves, Jed was a pioneering voice in alternative radio, a beloved agent of chaos, and the man who made Los Angeles afternoons weirder, louder, and infinitely more interesting," said Paul Sinacore, a friend and fellow musician.

Despite his success, Gould faced personal challenges, including a 1989 arrest on heroin charges, which led him to recovery. He later co-created a radio show called "Clean and Crazy" to promote a message of fun and creativity without substance abuse.

Gould's impact on the music scene was profound. He not only introduced new sounds to the airwaves but also conducted memorable interviews with rock legends, including David Bowie, U2, and Elvis Costello. His ability to connect with artists and fans alike made him a respected figure in the industry.

His death has left a significant void in the music community, with tributes pouring in from fans and fellow DJs. Many remember him as a mentor and inspiration, someone who encouraged others to embrace their individuality and creativity.

As fans mourn the loss of Jed the Fish, his influence will undoubtedly continue to resonate through the music and culture he helped shape. His legacy as a groundbreaking DJ and cultural icon will be remembered by all who tuned in to his shows and felt the energy he brought to the airwaves.

Plans for a memorial service have not yet been announced, but it is clear that Jed the Fish will be sorely missed by his community of friends, fans, and fellow artists.
