Manga was born in Recife, Brazil, and began his football journey at Sport Club do Recife. He was a key player for Brazil during the 1966 World Cup, held in England, solidifying his status as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of South American football.

His illustrious career at Botafogo spanned from 1959 to 1968. During this period, he was instrumental in securing four Campeonato Carioca titles in 1961, 1962, 1964, and 1966, as well as three Rio-São Paulo Tournament victories in 1962, 1964, and 1966. Over his tenure at Botafogo, Manga played a total of 442 matches and amassed an impressive 20 trophies, making him the most decorated player in the club's history.

Botafogo expressed their sorrow in an official statement: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Haílton Corrêa de Arruda, our unforgettable former goalkeeper and idol, Manga, at the age of 87 at Hospital Rio Barra. Manga was one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of world football and defended our Glorious Club from 1959 to 1968, being part of two of the greatest teams in our history, the Carioca champions of 61/62 and 67/68. A starter for the Brazilian national team in '66, Manga leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable saves and immense love for Botafogo."

The wake for Manga will take place on Wednesday, April 9, in the noble hall of General Severiano, the headquarters of Botafogo, a fitting tribute to a player who dedicated his life to the sport and the club. The president of Botafogo Social, João Paulo de Magalhães Lins, made the hall available for fans and friends to pay their respects.

After his successful stint with Botafogo, Manga continued to shine at Internacional, where he played from 1969 to 1974. He won two Brazilian Championships in 1975 and 1976, alongside three Gaúcho championships in 1974, 1975, and 1976. His courage on the field was exemplified during the 1975 Brazilian Championship final, where he played with two broken fingers, earning the respect and admiration of fans and teammates alike.

International also released a statement mourning the loss: "It is with deep sorrow that Sport Club Internacional announces the passing of Haílton Corrêa de Arruda, the eternal Manga, at the age of 87. An unforgettable idol, Manga was a fundamental piece in our history, winning two Brazilian Championships and three Gaúcho Championships.
