After completing a celebrated career spanning over four decades, Dutch singer Hans de Booij has announced his retirement due to long Covid, which has left him unable to perform at the level he once enjoyed. Known for his hit song "Annabel," De Booij undertook his last performance at the famed venue Paard in The Hague just before the New Year, marking the end of his illustrious music career.
The 67-year-old singer’s health issues began three years ago when he contracted the coronavirus, necessitating his hospitalization at the UMC Amsterdam where he ended up on the intensive care unit. Reflecting on this dark chapter, De Booij recalled, "I fell down a nightmare. Death was calling me. At the window, I saw a man pointing upwards, as if heaven was waiting for me. But I heard a voice telling me not to go, and then I spontaneously prayed the Our Father." His remarkable recovery from the brink of death has been overshadowed by his long-term struggles with persistent symptoms of the virus.
Long Covid has significantly impacted his energy levels, with De Booij explaining, "After every performance, I need one entire day to recover just to produce enough sound for three songs." Despite his desire to continue performing, the singer has finally come to terms with the reality of his situation. He stated, "I had hoped the problems would lessen, but I have now abandoned all hope. I have no other option than to stop." Earlier this year, he had already hinted at the cessation of his singing career, saying, "I would have liked to continue, but I no longer have the strength. It takes a miracle for me to enter the studio or the stage again. Under my current condition, this can never happen.”
Hans de Booij’s departure from the music scene is not only significant for him personally, but it also marks the end of an era for fans who have cherished his music over the years. The singer, who was born and raised in Arnhem, made waves with other popular hits such as "Een vrouw zoals jij" and "Thuis ben," which solidified his place in Dutch pop culture.
Much of his career was defined by his heartfelt lyrics and engaging performances, establishing him as one of the icons of Dutch music. The emotional farewell during his last concert not only gave closure to his fans but is also reflective of the broader impact of the long Covid crisis on artists around the world, many of whom face similar health battles.
Looking toward the future, De Booij plans to leave for Gozo, Malta, where he hopes to find solace among friends. "I needed to avoid everything, and I need to go somewhere quiet now," he revealed. His move resonates with many who have faced life-altering challenges as they navigate their paths post-Covid.
Through it all, Hans de Booij continues to embody resilience, showcasing how one might respond to life’s unexpected curveballs. His story sheds light on the struggles faced by many who have suffered from long Covid, driving home the importance of health and well-being over professional obligations.
While the music world says goodbye to one of its beloved icons, the legacy of Hans de Booij is sure to remain through his timeless songs and the impact he has made on the hearts of his fans.
