Upon breaching the property after making several attempts to contact its residents, the team encountered the aggressive pitbull.
Fearful for their safety, one officer discharged his service weapon, following the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) Use of Force Policy. The incident ended tragically for the dog, which collapsed and later died. Thankfully, no illegal activities were discovered during the search, and no arrests were made at the scene.
The attack on officers is not the only recent incident involving pitbulls. On November 4, a woman named Leanne McDonell found herself at the center of legal trouble when her pitbull, named Prince, fatally mauled her friend, 42-year-old Akif Mushtaq, at her home. Mushtaq sustained severe injuries including multiple puncture wounds to his neck and throat, leading to his death from organ failure and lack of oxygen to the brain. Following the incident, McDonell faced charges of owning or being responsible for a dog dangerously out of control, causing injury resulting in death. During court proceedings, she pleaded not guilty.

Meanwhile, on New Year's Eve, another appalling attack occurred when two pitbulls assaulted Ashley, leaving her fighting for her life. This incident unfolded around 10:40 am as she was walking to her local convenience store near Plymouth Road and Meyers Road. The aggressive pitbulls ambushed the unassuming Ashley, causing her to scream for help and attempt to scale the fence for safety. Tragically, bystanders who rushed to her aid also became victims of the attacking dogs.
Ashley later recounted the harrowing experience, stating, "That could’ve been a child and not me, cause kids walk to the store all the time." Her words resonate deeply, raising concerns about the risks posed to the most vulnerable individuals within the community. The chaos culminated with one of the pitbulls being shot by police after it attempted to attack them. The second dog was captured and later euthanized. Ashley sustained serious injuries, requiring hospitalization for her bites on her hand, arm, and leg but expressed gratitude for those who tried to assist her, as she noted, "Everybody who was trying to help me got injured. One guy's head got ripped. I'm really appreciative for them, because if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be here."
