Veteran KBS announcer and former politician Ryu Geun-chan has passed away at the age of 76, leaving behind a remarkable legacy within the South Korean media and political landscapes. He died on February 26, as confirmed by KBS, where he made significant contributions throughout his career.
Ryu began his professional life at KBS as part of the second round of public recruitment for journalists back in 1974. His diligent work ethic saw him rise through the ranks to become the deputy head of the political department, later transitioning to serve as KBS's Washington correspondent. This experience equipped him with valuable perspectives on international affairs, which he later shared with the Korean public.
Returning to South Korea, Ryu took on the role of anchor for several prominent news programs, including 'KBS News Plaza' and 'KBS News9,' from 1992 to 1998. His engaging delivery and thorough reporting earned him recognition, and he was named the second most influential journalist by Sisa Journal in 1997, enhancing his status as one of the leading figures in South Korean journalism.
After leaving KBS, Ryu ventured beyond media and entered politics. He worked as the media adviser for Kim Jong-pil, head of the Liberty Union Party, before successfully winning seats as a member of the National Assembly for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2008, representing the Chungcheongnam-do districts of Boryeong and Seocheon.
Ryu’s legacy includes not only his contributions to broadcasting and politics but also his family, who survive him. He is remembered as a devoted husband to his wife, Jo Young-soon, and as the father of two children: Ik-hee, who is the head physician at the BnB Eye Clinic, and Min-hee, who works as a simultaneous interpreter. His family also includes his son-in-law Kim Seok-hwan, the vice president of WeMade Co., and his daughter-in-law Jo Nam-hye, the CEO of Lighten Up USA.
The wake for Ryu Geun-chan has been organized at Samseong Hospital Funeral Hall, Room 15. The funeral service is scheduled to take place on the noon of February 28. Following this, he will be laid to rest at the Jin-dalrae Memorial Park at the Seoul Memorial Park, marking the end of his personal chapter but the enduring impact of his professional one.
