Leeds United Enhances Accessibility Through Disabled Advisory Group

The club celebrates inclusivity with the Unite for Access campaign and ongoing improvements for disabled fans.

Leeds United has recently celebrated Level Playing Field’s annual Unite for Access campaign with the invaluable support of its newly formed Disabled Advisory Group. This initiative, which aims to improve accessibility and promote inclusivity, marks a significant step for the club as it seeks to enhance the experience of disabled fans at Elland Road.

The Disabled Advisory Group was established towards the end of the 2022/23 season, stemming from the success of the club's Supporters Advisory Board. Currently, the group meets quarterly, but plans are in place to increase the frequency of these gatherings to every two months. The goal is to ensure that Leeds United remains proactive in addressing the needs and concerns of its disabled supporters.

The group creates an extensive agenda for each meeting, allowing members to contribute discussion topics. These meetings not only serve as a platform for communication but also enable staff to share updates and address current issues faced by disabled fans.

Over the past year, the formation of this advisory group has led to remarkable progress at Leeds United. Improvements include a newly implemented pathway through the North Car Park, designed specifically with accessibility in mind, alongside enhanced Public Address (PA) expectations for events. Discussions during meetings have also revolved around various topics, from car parking to new facilities and developments, as well as updates on the disability access statement.

To build this vital group, all disabled ticket holders were contacted via email, inviting them to apply for membership. The selection process, conducted by the Head of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion along with the Disability Liaison Officer, was rigorous with over 100 applications submitted. Members chosen represented a range of disabilities, ages, and genders to reflect the diverse spectrum of needs within the fan base.

Recently, all members of the Disabled Advisory Group were invited to attend a Sky Bet Championship fixture against Millwall, which celebrated Level Playing Field. The club used this opportunity to honor the contributions of its disabled fans, with members engaging with Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu, taking photos with branded Unite for Access materials on the pitch.

Additionally, the most recent minutes from the Disabled Advisory Group meetings can be accessed online, showcasing the club's commitment to transparency and accountability.

Through these concerted efforts, Leeds United is not only addressing the immediate needs of its disabled supporters but is also setting a precedent for inclusivity and accessibility within sports environments. By continually refining its approach and enhancing communication with fans, the club is paving the way towards a more inclusive future at Elland Road and beyond.
