Lauterbach's remarks linking Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz to the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) triggered outrage across the political spectrum, with immediate calls for his resignation.
On January 27, 2023, Lauterbach took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize Merz's willingness to collaborate with the AfD on migration policies. Citing the significant historical day, he stated, "Today, on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, we are engaged in the 'bird poop' debate, and Friedrich Merz is currying favor with the AfD. Essentially, as the first democrat, he says: where it helps me, I allow support from Nazis. Morally bankrupt." This strongly worded tweet came under fire for its insensitivity concerning the historical importance of the day.
Merz's party, the CDU, did not remain silent. CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann characterized Lauterbach's comments as "a complete derailment" and demanded the Minister's resignation, stating, "On such a day, this member of the government should actually be dismissed.
