Laurier Golden Hawks Secure Vanier Cup Spot After Uteck Bowl Win

A commanding victory against Bishop's Gaiters marks Laurier's return to the Vanier Cup after almost two decades

The Laurier Golden Hawks are back on the national stage, stealing the spotlight with their stunning performance against the Bishop's Gaiters, clinching the Uteck Bowl with a commanding score of 48-24. This victory marks their first advance to the Vanier Cup since 2005, sending waves of excitement through the Kitchener-Waterloo community as they prepare to compete against the top-ranked Laval Rouge et Or.

On Saturday, November 16, 2024, in Lennoxville, Quebec, the Golden Hawks showcased their prowess. Leading the charge was fourth-year quarterback Taylor Elgersma, who turned heads with his exceptional play. Elgersma completed 30 out of 34 passes, amassing 452 yards and throwing five touchdown passes—setting a new bowl game record for the most passing yards.

The match was firmly under Laurier's control from the start. Ryan Hughes emerged as the star of the game with three touchdown receptions, amassing 212 yards on just six catches. Two of these scoring connections came just before halftime, lifting the Golden Hawks to a staggering 34-3 lead. Elgersma’s other two touchdown passes went to receiver Sebastian Parsalidis and Ryan Speight, sealing the fate of the Gaiters just after the game's midpoint.

Defensively, Johari Hastings made significant contributions with five tackles and snagged an interception during the third quarter, effectively halting Bishop's momentum and disrupting what could have been a driving drive. Hastings was recognized as the defensive player of the game, complementing Elgersma's offensive accolades.

Reflecting on the victory, Laurier’s coach, Michael Faulds, emphasized the significance of this achievement for both the team and the community, stating, "This is huge for our school, our players, and our alumni. It's been almost two decades, and to bring back this kind of energy and excitement is phenomenal." Faulds noted the importance of their unyielding teamwork and determination, which propelled them through the match.

While the Golden Hawks celebrated their victory, the team is already focused on their upcoming challenge: The Laval Rouge et Or, the No. 3-ranked team who previously overcame the Regina Rams to secure their spot. The Vanier Cup is scheduled for November 23, 2024, set to take place live at 1 p.m. ET in Kingston, Ontario. It's been nearly 20 years since Laurier last graced the Vanier Cup, with their last title win being a close 24-23 matchup against Saskatchewan.

The anticipation builds as the Golden Hawks prepare to face Laval, historically recognized as one of the premier teams within Canadian university football. Both teams will certainly bring their best to this high-stakes matchup, sparking whispers of what could be one of the most exciting finals yet.

For Laurier’s players and fans alike, this accomplishment is more than just another game; it's the culmination of hard work, perseverance, and unity—a celebration of their indomitable spirit after years of striving to return to this prestigious competition. The anticipation spreads throughout the campus, as students and alumni prepare to support their team with unmatched fervor.
