Laureus World Sports Awards Celebrates Athletic Excellence

Rafael Nadal, Simone Biles, and Mondo Duplantis shine at the 2025 gala in Madrid

The Laureus World Sports Awards 2025 took place on April 21, 2025, at the iconic Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid, celebrating the achievements of athletes from around the globe. This year marked a special occasion as the event commemorated 25 years since the inception of the Laureus Academy, which has recognized outstanding contributions to sports and society.

The evening was filled with emotional tributes and heartfelt speeches, culminating in the recognition of some of the most remarkable athletes in history. Among the highlights was Rafael Nadal, who received the prestigious Laureus Icon Award, an honor previously bestowed only once before in 2011. Nadal, who announced his retirement last year, expressed his gratitude, saying, "I don’t know how to start. I haven’t prepared for this wonderful moment. Many of you are athletes who have inspired me since I was a child, and being able to speak in front of you is very special." He reflected on his illustrious career, stating, "It has been an unforgettable journey, and I have lived things I could never have imagined. Without my family and friends, none of this would have been possible. They have supported me through good times and bad, especially during injuries when I saw no way out."

Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history, was awarded the title of Best Sportswoman of the Year. In her acceptance speech, she noted, "I always dreamed of moments like this since I was a child, so I thank my parents for allowing my passion to become my profession. I believe my work has managed to inspire. My husband couldn’t be here, but happy anniversary!" Biles's victory solidifies her status as a leading figure in sports, adding to her impressive collection of accolades.

Other notable winners included Mondo Duplantis, who was named Best Male Athlete of the Year. The Swedish pole vaulter has broken the world record an astonishing 11 times and currently holds it at 6.27 meters. He expressed his gratitude, saying, "I wouldn’t be holding an award like this if it weren’t for the people who have inspired me and made me a better person. I hope to break the world record even more times, especially with the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics in sight."

The Real Madrid football team was honored as the Best Team of the Year. Players Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal accepted the award, with Modric stating, "We had a great season, winning many trophies. Real Madrid is a team that pushes you to perform at your best. The competition was tough, but we were the best, and we deserve this award."

Lamine Yamal, the young Spanish footballer, received the award for Best Breakthrough Athlete. In a video message, he shared his disappointment at not being able to attend the gala but expressed his pride in the recognition, saying, "It’s an honor for me and my family. I want to thank the staff of the national team and Barcelona. I hope we win more collective titles in the future. I will keep working for these things."

She expressed her joy, stating, "I feel very happy, it’s an honor to receive this award. She expressed her gratitude, saying, "Thank you very much for this Laureus award. As part of the Paralympic family, it is an incredible honor for me. I’m so happy to be here tonight with you. I work hard every day, but I don’t do it alone. My team, my family, and the fans inspire me and help me achieve everything."

Kelly Slater, the legendary surfer, received the Lifetime Achievement Award, a fitting tribute to his contributions to the sport. He reflected on his journey, saying, "There are many people who have inspired me throughout my life. I’m emotional; many memories come to mind from when I was a child. I remember all those moments when I won at 19 years old. As a surfer, this is a great recognition."

The gala also highlighted the important work of organizations like Kick4Life, which won the Sport for Good Award. This initiative uses football to help children in difficult situations, promoting health, education, and gender rights in Lesotho, a country facing significant challenges.
