Eight talented groups compete for top honors with original performances at Parque Santa Catalina this Saturday.

The vibrant Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will reach its climax this Saturday, February 22, with the eagerly anticipated final of the Murgas Competition at 9:00 pm on the lively stage at Parque Santa Catalina. This year's event has generated excitement as it showcases eight talented groups who have triumphed through three competitive phases to arrive at this grand finale.

Under the energetic direction of Daniel Calero, the presenter for the gala, the murgas will take turns to perform their unique and original songs, competing for prestigious prizes including the coveted Interpretation Award alongside accolades for Best Costumes and more. The finalists, each known for their creative flair and social commentary, are:

  • Los Nietos de Sarymanchez

  • Los Twitty’s

  • Los Serenquenquenes

  • Los Gambusinos

  • Los Legañosos

  • Los Chancletas

  • Los Chacho Tú

  • Las Traviesas

This year's event is particularly special, as admission to the murgas final will be free, allowing more spectators to enjoy the festivities without any cost. The event is set to draw large crowds, adding to the joyous atmosphere typical of this esteemed carnival.

Each participating group will be allotted 30 minutes to captivate the audience with their performances, presenting two original songs filled with vibrant rhythms, satire, and poignant social messages. Following their acts, the jury will deliberate, and results will be announced later, early Sunday morning.

One of the standout participants this year, Las Traviesas, is notable for being the only all-female group competing. With their thematic presentation titled Perdiendo el Norte, they aim to address pressing social issues such as environmental concerns, housing crises, and the importance of community engagement. During their performance, they invite the audience to stay alert with their opening number, Alerta, que suenan las alarmas, highlighting themes of vigilance against sociopolitical challenges.

Meanwhile, Los Chacho Tú from the Schamann neighborhood will offer their insights on local issues through their catchy tunes. Their presentation, which includes songs like Yo-Shue and El meteorólogo del Carnaval, cleverly uses humor to critique the state of affairs and the expected weather—elements relevant to both the carnival spirit and everyday life.

With the iconic backdrop of Parque Santa Catalina setting the stage, all eyes will be on the performers as they navigate their unique narratives through song, dance, and whimsical presentations. The murgas tradition is deeply ingrained within the carnival culture, serving as vehicles for social commentary and communal celebration.

Los Serenquenquenes, the winners of their respective phase, have garnered attention with their nostalgic songs reflecting on the evolution of the carnival since the end of dictatorship, channeling both humor and historical reflection. Their performance includes El influencer del Carnaval, which critiques the societal impacts of social media through engaging musical storytelling.

Los Gambusinos’ act also tackles contemporary issues, as their performances delves deep through satire, addressing widely relevant topics like housing prices and political responsibilities, keeping audiences both entertained and reflective.

Each group brings its unique style and thematic elements, ensuring the final promises not only to captivate carnival-goers but also to shed light on important societal matters through the lens of humor and creativity.

Expectations are high for this year’s competition, as the vibrant visuals, costumes, and community spirit merge to create unforgettable carnival experiences.
Viewers can follow live updates and enjoy the performances through various platforms, including RTVC’s channels and social media, which will broadcast the event.

Spanning decades, the Murgas Competition has become synonymous with the essence of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival, capturing the hearts of locals and visitors alike. From humorous jests to heartfelt dedications, the Murgas promise to be the highlight of this year’s carnival celebrations.
