Larry Lamb Discusses New Book And Recent Projects

The actor shares insights on his debut novel and upcoming drama series

Actor Larry Lamb, best known for his role as Mick Shipman in the beloved sitcom Gavin and Stacey, recently appeared on the BBC's The One Show to discuss his exciting new venture into writing. During the episode, which aired on Tuesday night, April 8, 2025, Lamb shared the spotlight with fellow actors Jill Halfpenny and Stephen McGann, engaging in a lively conversation about their upcoming drama series, The Feud.

The 77-year-old actor revealed details about his debut novel, All Wrapped Up, describing it as an adventure story centered around a first assistant director working on a film in the Caribbean. "His job as first assistant director, working man, is to hold on and keep everything as he should but unfortunately, the whole thing is unravelling around him," Lamb explained. He went on to elaborate that the story reflects the chaos often experienced in the workplace, saying, "It's like everybody's life at work, that's what it is and that's what has got me doing it."

Lamb's transition from acting to writing has been met with enthusiasm, particularly as he aims to highlight the unsung heroes of the television industry. In a previous interview with The Bookseller, he noted, "Maybe from the first set I was on. I love acting, but I realised right away that the crew are the unsung heroes: the electricians, set builders, wardrobe, caterers... regular working people who happen to be doing something people find fascinating." He further mentioned that his book incorporates elements of romance and action, emphasizing that even minor disruptions on set, such as airplane noise or budget cuts, can lead to significant drama.

During the show, presenters Gethin Jones and Clara Amfo also delved into Lamb's experiences on Gavin and Stacey. The sitcom, which concluded with a Christmas special last year, attracted a staggering 19.3 million viewers, making it one of the most-watched scripted television events in UK history. Reflecting on the show's success, Lamb praised the writing of Ruth Jones and James Corden, stating, "It's just brilliant writing from Ruth and James."

In addition to discussing his book, Lamb shared insights about his character in The Feud, where he plays Terry, the father of Emma, portrayed by Jill Halfpenny. The series is set against the backdrop of an idyllic suburban street, where tensions rise as neighbors clash over a proposed kitchen extension. When asked if Terry was a mix of his previous characters, Lamb humorously replied, "That's why I took the part - it was easy!"

The One Show, which airs on weekdays at 7 PM on BBC One, has become a platform for celebrities to share their latest projects and personal stories. Lamb's appearance is part of a broader trend of actors transitioning into writing, a path that has seen many successful figures explore their creativity beyond the screen.

As Lamb embarks on this new chapter of his career, he hopes to inspire others to recognize the importance of those who work behind the scenes in the entertainment industry. His novel All Wrapped Up not only serves as a tribute to these unsung heroes but also showcases his ability to weave engaging narratives that resonate with audiences.

With the release of All Wrapped Up and the upcoming series The Feud, Larry Lamb continues to prove that creativity knows no bounds, and his journey from actor to author is just beginning. Fans of his work eagerly await what he will bring to the literary world, hoping that his storytelling will capture the same magic that made Gavin and Stacey a household name.
