Lantern Festival Sparks Valentine’s Day Marriage Rush In Hong Kong

Couples flock to registry for romantic weddings as festivities celebrate love and reunion.

Hong Kong is set to celebrate the Lantern Festival and Valentine's Day with unique events and festivities, creating the perfect backdrop for couples to tie the knot. On February 12, which marks the Lantern Festival, 223 couples registered their marriage, surpassing the anticipated 184 on Valentine's Day, February 14, according to the Immigration Department.

The day is not only significant due to its cultural heritage—symbolizing reunion and happiness—but also serves as the ideal time for couples to express their commitment. Many opt to get married on this auspicious day, believing it enhances their bond. "It's like icing on the cake," said one couple who had known each other for seven years through online connections. They expressed their joy at getting married on such a meaningful day.

Among the 223 couples, the Marriage Registry at Tseung Kwan O reported 23 registrations, even as light rain fell throughout the morning. Couples were undeterred by the weather, eagerly documenting their special day with photographs. The appeal of the day lies not only in its romantic ambiance but the cultural significance attached to the Lantern Festival, traditionally celebrated on the 15th day of the Lunar New Year.

One groom reminisced about meeting his bride online seven years ago, emphasizing how the day’s festivities would add to their special moment. The couple had previously booked their marriage date months in advance to avoid last-minute rush and anticipated high demand on such popular dates.

On Valentine's Day, it is expected there will be about 110 additional couples submitting marriage notices. Despite the competition for marriage slots, the surge reflects broader trends where couples are choosing meaningful dates to get married.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong is brimming with festive activities catering to lovers and families alike. The city is decked out with countless visually appealing light displays and couple-friendly interactive exhibits, perfect for making memories. Attractions such as the 'Light Up Your Love' event at Kai Tak AIRSIDE are gaining attention, allowing couples to send messages of love displayed on giant LED screens. The initiative combines romantic enticements with high-tech displays to capture the essence of both Valentine's Day and the Lantern Festival.

Aside from the high-tech displays, various malls and public places are hosting events, including stunning light shows and festive decor, with the streets alive with decorations symbolizing love and togetherness.

Couples planning their weddings can tie the knot at various locations across the city, with many taking advantage of the enchanting atmosphere to celebrate their union. The inclusive spirit of both these days—celebrated through light, love, and festivities—makes it exceptionally alluring for couples stepping forward to commit to their partners.

Overall, the concurrent celebration of the Lantern Festival and Valentine's Day enriches Hong Kong’s cultural fabric, enhancing the joy of love and unity during this festive period.

Participated by many stores around the city, the romantic atmosphere will not only uplift every couple's spirit but also calls for effectively continuing longstanding traditions, blending youth's modernity with heritage. Consequently, this marriage rush intertwining both festivals embodies not merely celebratory spirit but also the growing acknowledgment of wedding preparations marking these occasions.
