On April 3, 2025, Lalu Prasad Yadav, the former Chief Minister of Bihar and leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), underwent a successful operation at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. The 76-year-old politician was admitted to the hospital after his health deteriorated due to severe back pain, prompting an urgent transfer from Patna to Delhi.
Reports indicate that Lalu Yadav had been seriously ill for the past two days, suffering from deep wounds on his back. His condition worsened on the night of April 2, leading to his admission to a hospital in Patna. Following initial treatment, he was airlifted to AIIMS around 9:35 PM.
His son, Tejashwi Yadav, addressed the media before his father's transfer, stating, "My father has wounds on his back and hand. Despite this, he chose to travel by a regular flight. However, his condition deteriorated, leading us to take him to Delhi by air ambulance."
Upon arrival at AIIMS, senior doctors performed the operation, which was deemed successful. Post-surgery, Lalu Yadav was moved from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to a general ward, indicating a positive outlook for his recovery. Doctors are optimistic about his health improving in the coming days.
Tejashwi Yadav shared that his father has been battling diabetes for several years and has a history of heart surgery and kidney transplant. He expressed concern for his father's health but also confidence in his resilience, calling him a "courageous person" for choosing to travel despite his condition.
In addition to his medical issues, Lalu Yadav has faced legal troubles, having been convicted in several fodder scam cases. He has been out on bail for health reasons and is currently dealing with investigations related to the land-for-jobs scam, where the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned several family members for questioning.
As Lalu Yadav recuperates, his wife, Rabri Devi, and other family members remain by his side at the hospital, providing support during this challenging time. The family is hopeful for his swift recovery and a return to health.
