NEW DELHI: RJD chief and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav was discharged from Paras Hospital in Bihar on April 2, 2025, after a brief hospitalization due to deteriorating health. His son, Tejashwi Yadav, confirmed that Lalu would be heading to AIIMS Delhi for further treatment. "He is normal at present, he will be taken to the Delhi AIIMS soon for further treatment... 'Lalu Yadav Kaleja wale admi hain'... Soon, he will be fit and fine," Tejashwi stated, providing an optimistic outlook on his father's condition.
Earlier in the day, Lalu Prasad was admitted to Paras Hospital following a sudden decline in his health. Reports indicated that his blood pressure had dropped significantly, leading to concerns among family members. RJD leader Bhai Virendra elaborated on the situation, saying, "I always visit here, because he is our leader, guardian, but when I came to know that his health has deteriorated, I had come. We knew that his blood pressure, sugar level are fluctuating, he is going to Delhi, and he will return after check-up. There is no need to worry. The blessings of 13 crore people of Bihar are with him. He is one who always fights against communal forces, he is required."
Lalu Prasad Yadav, who is 76 years old, has a history of serious health issues, including heart disease and diabetes. He underwent a kidney transplant in Singapore in 2022, with his younger daughter, Rohini Acharya, donating her kidney. In September 2024, he had angioplasty performed in Mumbai, and in 2014, he underwent open heart surgery. These medical challenges have kept him largely away from public engagements.
On the day of his hospitalization, Lalu was on his way to the Patna airport to board an Air India flight scheduled for 4:05 PM when he began experiencing health complications. His blood pressure reportedly dropped to a critical level of 88/44, alarming his family. Tejashwi Yadav recounted the moment, stating, "We knew that his blood pressure and sugar level were fluctuating. He is going to Delhi, and he will return after a check-up. There is no need to worry." Following his admission to Paras Hospital, Dr. Prakash Sinha, the head of pulmonary medicine at the hospital, noted that Lalu Prasad had also experienced a fever and was treated with medication. His condition improved after intravenous therapy, allowing him to travel to Delhi.
Tejashwi Yadav, who is now the Leader of the Opposition, expressed concern for his father's health but also confidence in his resilience. He remarked, "My father is a man of courage. He chose to travel by a normal flight." Despite his health issues, Lalu Prasad has remained a significant figure in Indian politics, known for his ability to connect with the masses and his long-standing role in the RJD party.
Moreover, Lalu Prasad's recent health scare comes amid ongoing legal challenges. He is currently out on bail after serving time for multiple fodder scam cases. His family, including his wife Rabri Devi and son Tejashwi, have also been implicated in the land-for-jobs case, raising questions about their political future.
Lalu Prasad's hospitalization has sparked concern among his supporters and the public alike, with many expressing their wishes for his speedy recovery. The RJD supremo has been a prominent voice in Bihar politics, often standing against communal forces and advocating for social justice.
As Lalu Prasad heads to AIIMS for further treatment, the political landscape in Bihar remains watchful. His health and recovery will not only impact his family but also the future of the RJD party and its role in the state's political discourse.
In the past week, Lalu Prasad was also seen at a demonstration by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, protesting against the Waqf Bill, indicating his continued engagement in political matters despite his health challenges. His unique style and mass appeal have made him a beloved figure among many in Bihar, and his supporters are hopeful for his recovery and return to active politics.
The blessings and support of the people of Bihar, as emphasized by Bhai Virendra, play a crucial role in Lalu Prasad's journey ahead. As he prepares for treatment in Delhi, the RJD leader's resilience and determination to overcome health hurdles remain evident.
