Lakers Suffer Setback Against Nets Amid Injury Crisis

Despite strong starts from Gabe Vincent and Jordan Goodwin, Los Angeles falls short 111-108 without key players.

After snapping their eight-game winning streak with a loss to the Boston Celtics, the Los Angeles Lakers faced the Brooklyn Nets on March 10, 2025, continuing their road trip without key players due to injuries. With star player LeBron James among the absentees, the shorthanded Lakers fell to the Nets 111-108, struggling to maintain their early lead as Brooklyn capitalized on their missteps.

The Lakers opened the game promisingly, outscoring Brooklyn 28-16 by the end of the first quarter. Gabe Vincent entered as a starter due to injuries and made his presence felt, scoring 13 points early on, including three three-pointers. Luka Doncic showcased his playmaking early, assisting teammates like Dalton Knecht and Jordan Goodwin as they built momentum.

Despite the strong start, the Lakers did not maintain their offensive efficiency. The second quarter saw the Nets begin to dominate, particularly on the glass, grabbing 16 offensive rebounds and converting on second-chance points. By halftime, the Lakers found themselves trailing 48-47 as their turnover rate climbed to 16, yielding 19 points for the Nets, which proved detrimental.

Doncic, who would finish the game with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists, struggled with his shooting on the night, finishing just 8-25 overall. Austin Reaves faced similar troubles, ending with 17 points on 3-14 shooting, all the meanwhile being unable to find his rhythm. Yet, he contributed with eight rebounds and eight assists, but his -10 plus-minus reflected his struggle.

After the halftime break, the Lakers tried to regain momentum, but the Nets’ persistent scoring and offensive rebounds kept putting pressure on them. Consequently, as they fell behind yet again, the scoreboard flipped to show Brooklyn up 81-79 at the end of the third quarter. The Lakers' third-quarter struggles highlighted the need for their stars to step up, but they continued to battle against the rising tide from the Nets.

During the final quarter, the Lakers had to dig deep to come back, yet the defensive breakdowns cost them significantly, particularly with the Nets capitalizing on the glass. Former Lakers star D'Angelo Russell made significant contributions for Brooklyn late, even hitting simultaneous three-pointers with Vincent, who ended his night with a season-high 24 points.

Jordan Goodwin performed exceptionally well off the bench, making the most of his opportunities with 17 points, including five of six from three-point range. Knecht chipped in with 19 points, showcasing depth as several key position players took the floor, including Alex Len alongside the starting five of Doncic, Reaves, Vincent, and Knecht.

The encounters became particularly tense as the score fluctuated, showcasing 13 lead changes. Even with steady scoring from Gabe and progress made by Goodwin, adversity mounted as the Lakers were able to score without effectively stopping the Nets from second-chance opportunities.

When the clock wound down to the last moments of the game, the Lakers found themselves down by six points. Austin Reaves managed to bank home one last three-pointer, continuing the fight. Still, the defense fractured, allowing Brooklyn repeated chances to score, which they did. Following Luka’s wild three-pointer attempt to tie the game, the Lakers were left with only regrets as their chances of grabbing victory slipped away.

Despite this setback, the Lakers have important upcoming matchups, facing the Milwaukee Bucks on March 13 and the Denver Nuggets the following night. For the Lakers, it’s clear they must improve on rebounding as well as limiting turnovers moving forward. This loss could serve as both a wake-up call and moment of growth as the players implement the next-man-up mentality emphasized by Doncic throughout the night.

With the season coming to the final stretch, fans will be watching closely to see how the boys adjust with their rotating squad, hoping to find consistency before heading deep and far away this postseason.
