Lakers Overcome Hawks As LeBron Sets Record

LeBron James surpasses Michael Jordan for most 30-point games amid Lakers’ 119-102 victory over Atlanta.

The Los Angeles Lakers secured a decisive victory over the Atlanta Hawks, winning 119-102 on January 3, 2025, at Crypto.com Arena. This win marked not only another step toward the playoffs but also highlighted LeBron James' historic achievement.

LeBron James, who scored 30 points on 13 of 20 shooting, became the NBA's all-time leader in 30-point games, surpassing Michael Jordan's long-held record. This milestone came as he hit pivotal shots during the fourth quarter, displaying the scoring prowess that's defined his career. "This was another dominant performance, and I’m proud of how we executed our game plan," said Lakers head coach Darvin Ham.

After his recent absence due to injury, Anthony Davis also made his presence felt, contributing 18 points and dominating the boards with 19 rebounds. Known for his versatility, Davis played a key role, especially after sitting out the previous game against the Portland Trail Blazers. His performance this night showcased just how integral he is to the team's success.

On the other hand, the Hawks struggled to find their rhythm as Trae Young, who netted 33 points, lamented, "We just couldn’t get our shots to fall tonight, and it cost us." The Hawks had notable difficulties from the perimeter, shooting just 30% from three-point range, which was far below their usual standard.

The game began with both teams exchanging leads, showing early signs of competitiveness. After taking control early with several fast breaks and solid defense, the Lakers established a seven-point lead midway through the first quarter. Despite the Hawks fighting back and keeping the score close, Los Angeles began to pull away as the first half progressed.

At halftime, the Lakers enjoyed an eight-point lead. They increased this to double digits shortly after the break, as Austin Reaves hit several three-pointers, something the Lakers needed to stay competitive. Nevertheless, the Hawks continued to press and found ways to respond, yet their shooting woes kept them from narrowing the gap.

Despite facing adversity, the Lakers executed their challenges effectively. They maintained high energy levels throughout the game, occasionally hampered by turnovers - with the final count reaching 17 on the night. These turnovers allowed the Hawks to remain within reach, forcing the Lakers to keep their concentration and intensity high.

Heading toward the final quarter, the Lakers expanded their lead, thanks primarily to LeBron's turnaround fadeaway shots and contributions from the bench, including important buckets from Rui Hachimura and Dalton Knecht, who each scored 13 points.

The Hawks found themselves unable to keep pace down the stretch, as Los Angeles outpaced them with defense and offensive execution, resulting in the 17-point margin of victory. The Lakers improved their record to 20-14, climbing to fourth place in the competitive Western Conference standings.

Meanwhile, the Hawks fell to 18-17, marking their second consecutive loss. They are on the interim of a six-game road trip, which has not gone as planned. This loss, characterized by missed shots and uncharacteristic defensive lapses, will require adjustments as they prepare for their next match against the L.A. Clippers.

This strongly contested matchup not only highlighted individual performances but also showcased the potential of the teams moving forward as they aim for postseason contention. With LeBron's historic night, Davis' return, and the Lakers' growing momentum, they look forward to their upcoming challenge against the Houston Rockets.
