Lagos Government Plans 3,000 Cameras To Enforce Traffic Laws

As part of a broader strategy, the state introduces online vehicle recertification and purchase verification services.

The Lagos State Government is intensifying its crackdown on traffic offenders with plans to install 3,000 e-police and speed limit cameras across the state to ensure stricter enforcement of road regulations.

The Director of the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Engr. Akin-George Fashola, disclosed this on Tuesday while speaking on Lagos Transport Trends and Perspectives, a programme sponsored by the Ministry of Transportation on Traffic Radio 96.1 FM.

Fashola revealed that speed limit cameras have already been installed at various locations, including Alapere-Ogudu Road, where the speed limit is set at 80km/h inbound Alausa and 60km/h inbound Iyana Oworo, as well as Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, where motorists must adhere to a 60km/h limit.

He added that e-police cameras have been deployed at Allen Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road in Ikeja to monitor red-light violations and other infractions. He urged motorists to observe warning signs at these locations to avoid penalties.

Emphasising the consequences for violators, the VIS Director warned that offenders caught exceeding speed limits would be fined ₦50,000. However, he stated that those who believe they were wrongly penalised could contest the fine by presenting evidence to support their case.

Addressing concerns on whether commercial vehicles are exempt from enforcement, Fashola made it clear that an average of 50 commercial buses are apprehended daily for various traffic violations, reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring all road users comply with the law.

In a major innovation, the Lagos State Government has also introduced an online roadworthiness recertification system for pre-existing vehicles. This new initiative allows vehicle owners to renew their roadworthiness certificates online without the need to visit a VIS office.

Additionally, the VIS has rolled out an auto verification service for those looking to purchase used vehicles. This service provides a detailed history of the vehicle, enabling buyers to make informed decisions before making a purchase.

Fashola encouraged Lagos residents to visit the VIS website or any of the 45 VIS centres across the state for reliable information and assistance, stressing that the government remains relentless in its mission to restore order on Lagos roads.
