Lael Wilcox Breaks Records With Historic Cycling Journey

Cyclist completes 18,000-mile trip, setting new records for women’s endurance sports

Long before endurance cyclist Lael Wilcox made history by becoming the fastest woman to ride around the globe, she already had her fair share of doubts thrown her way. While working at a bar, men would often question her incredible cycling achievements, insisting she must be lying about them. "That infuriated me," Wilcox revealed during her interview with CNN Sport. "They didn’t believe I did the rides! It’s crazy. Like, ‘You think I’m lying about what I’ve done?’" But now, there’s no room for skepticism. Lael Wilcox has completed her epic 18,000-mile adventure around the world, achieving this monumental feat in September 2024—108 days, 12 hours, and 12 minutes after setting off from Chicago. This marked her as the fastest woman to ever make the trip, smashing the previous record by more than two weeks.

Her ambitious route didn’t just circumnavigate the entirety of the globe; it also whisked her through 21 countries, from Europe to Australia and New Zealand, before returning to her Alaskan roots. Following the strict guidelines set forth by Guinness World Records, Wilcox cycled the designated distance matching the Earth’s circumference, proving her mettle with sheer perseverance.

This wasn’t Wilcox’s first foray beyond the ordinary. Her interest sparked back in 2016 when she participated in the TransAm Bike Race, where she achieved what no woman before her had done—she became the first female and first American to win. "It was this kind of light bulb moment, big idea, and I thought, ‘Well, what do I need to do this?’" Wilcox recounted, humorously reflecting on how she jokingly believed all she needed was to get her passport updated. From Oregon to Virginia, she rode, and by the end of it, her tenacity was ignited.

Wilcox’s record-breaking ride is not merely hers to celebrate; it demands attention on the significant yet often-disregarded aspect of women’s endurance and their unique physiological attributes. While men might boast more muscle mass and higher haemoglobin levels—traits beneficial for speed and strength—female athletes excel in endurance sports over extended periods. Research reveals women tend to utilize fat more effectively than men during these long-duration exercises, which preserves their energy over longer distances.

Besides physical prowess, mental endurance is key. Many studies suggest women have elevated pain tolerance during extended exertion due to hormonal distinctions, particularly the benefits of estrogen, which provides anti-inflammatory effects and aids recovery. The durability laid within women’s bodies often aligns with their age—Wilcox herself broke her record at 38 years old, distinguishing her from the typical male athlete peaks, which often arrive much younger.

Rather uniquely, female endurance athletes often perceive their peak performance tends to surface later. Research notes men frequently hit their athletic apex around their mid-20s, whereas women can keep growing stronger and more proficient well beyond their 30s and even 40s. So just how do these late bloomers achieve greatness? Pain management and mental resilience are game-changers—qualities honed with experience and age.

Wilcox's tale is one of remarkable grit—born out of necessity. After injuring herself and being unable to bear weight on her foot, she humorously borrowed her mother’s bike to maintain her mobility. Yet, what began as mere convenience blossomed quickly. Within two months, she cycled from Montreal to Florida, roaming freely and camping wherever she stopped. Over the following years, her adventurer spirit took her across 100,000 miles through 45 countries, each pedal stroke getting her closer to discovering herself.

Farmers’ fields, untamed mountains, and concrete jungles served as her classroom. During competitions, she once rode for 24 continuous hours, resting only momentarily beneath trees—pressing onward through strenuous conditions with very little support. Wilcox’s experience has helped her build mental endurance, the inner strength she continually taps whenever faced with adversity, from mechanical issues to mounting fatigue. "Everybody has their physical limits," she insightfully commented, shedding light on the mental battle many face.

Lael Wilcox's story is beneficial not just for its narration of perseverance but also for spotlighting the barriers women face within sports circles. Despite thrilling successes—the type of triumphs often outweighed by skepticism—there’s still this nagging doubt women encounter. Wilcox stated, "The biggest barrier is the doubt women have faced for so long.” This statement encapsulates the dual role she adopts, as she not only shatters records but also aims to inspire the next generation of female cyclists to chase their own ambitions.

To encourage more women to get involved, she helps to organize adventure programs for teen girls and has set up international scholarships to promote cycling among young women. "My hope is for more women to participate no matter what,” she shared, pushing through not just for herself but for all those watching.

Wilcox’s triumphant cycling career underlines the importance of resilience and pushes back against stereotypes surrounding female strength. Her adventure does more than just set records—it encourages open minds and empowers young girls worldwide to shatter their own walls, proving once and for all just how resilient and capable they are.
