Lada Iskra Launches Amid 55 Years Of Production

The new model fills a market gap between Granta and Vesta with innovative features and design.

On April 19, 2025, AvtoVAZ officially launched the production of its new model, the Lada Iskra, marking a significant milestone in the company's history as it coincides with the 55th anniversary of automobile production in Tolyatti. This new vehicle is set to fill a niche in the market between the Granta and Vesta models, offering consumers an innovative choice in the budget segment. The Iskra will be available in three versions: sedan, universal, and cross-universal, providing versatility for a range of drivers.

The development of the Lada Iskra, codenamed XJO, began in 2015 when the Vesta and XRAY models were just hitting the assembly line. Initially intended as a replacement for the Granta, the Iskra has been integrated into a global family of vehicles based on the CMF-B modular platform developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. However, the project faced delays when Renault exited the Russian market, leading to a necessary re-engineering of the model. The first public unveiling of the sedan occurred in the summer of 2024, but production only commenced recently.

According to AvtoVAZ, the Iskra is built on a modern global platform and features a design that represents the company's own development efforts. The exterior of the car showcases a new interpretation of the brand's signature X-design, inspired by the Lada XCODE concept car. The body was developed in AvtoVAZ's aerodynamic tunnel, ensuring that it meets contemporary standards for efficiency and performance.

The Lada Iskra will be offered with several engine options, all based on the well-known 1.6-liter VAZ engines. The base engine is an eight-valve unit producing 90 horsepower, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. A more powerful 16-valve engine delivering 106 horsepower will be available with either a six-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Iskra Cross version will only be offered with the 16-valve engine, ensuring it meets the needs of those looking for enhanced performance.

In terms of dimensions, the sedan and universal versions measure 4333 mm in length, while the Iskra Cross is slightly longer at 4342 mm. The sedan and universal models have a ground clearance of 170 mm, while the Cross version boasts a higher clearance of 200 mm, making it more suitable for varied terrains. The vehicle's wheelbase is 2603 mm, providing stability and comfort during drives.

The interior of the Iskra has been designed with functionality in mind. The front panel features a horizontal molding and rhomboid air ducts, with multiple storage niches for small items. The central tunnel includes two cup holders that accommodate standard paper cups and 0.5-liter bottles. A unique feature is the rear cup holder, which allows for vertical smartphone placement during charging. For the first time, Lada has implemented a remote fuel tank hatch release from inside the cabin, enhancing convenience for drivers.

Safety is a priority in the Iskra, with all configurations equipped with at least two front airbags, front seat belts featuring pretensioners and load limiters, and the ERA-GLONASS system for emergency response. The vehicle also includes Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and hill start assist, along with systems for safe parking and a rear-view camera to aid maneuvering.

In terms of design, the Iskra features a spacious trunk with a capacity of 500 liters, making it practical for everyday use. The model's improved noise insulation and rigid body structure contribute to a comfortable driving experience. The car's lighting technology primarily utilizes traditional lamps, with LEDs reserved for daytime running lights, maintaining a classic aesthetic while ensuring visibility.

The launch ceremony for the serial production of the Lada Iskra took place on April 19, 2025, with a special version of the sedan featuring the names of all 36,500 factory employees being the first to roll off the assembly line. Showings of the universal in blue and the cross-universal in orange are also anticipated. Reports indicate that a Lada Iskra in universal body was spotted near the AvtoVAZ factory, hinting at the excitement surrounding the new model.

Pricing for the Iskra has yet to be officially announced, but estimates suggest a starting price of around 1.2 to 1.3 million rubles for the base sedan. AvtoVAZ plans to produce up to 150,000 units of the Iskra annually, depending on market demand. For context, the Granta sold 201,000 units last year, while the Vesta saw sales of 123,000, although sales have declined this year.

As the production of the Lada Iskra begins, it represents not only a new model for AvtoVAZ but also a significant step in the evolution of the Russian automotive industry. With its modern design, advanced features, and competitive pricing, the Iskra is poised to attract a wide range of consumers looking for quality and value in their vehicle choices.
