Labor Day Travel Trends Highlight Seattle And Alaska Cruises

Surge in domestic travel coincides with increased interest for Alaska cruises and key cities this upcoming holiday weekend

Labor Day weekend is fast approaching, and this year, many Americans are preparing for some exciting travel adventures. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), Seattle is on track to be the number one travel destination for Labor Day weekend, showing an impressive 30% increase from last year.

Popular for its scenic beauty and vibrant culture, Seattle has topped the charts as travelers get ready to make the most of the holiday. Close behind are Anchorage and Juneau, both of which are also seeing increased interest as cruise tourism continues to rise.

Domestic travel overall is expected to increase by 9% this Labor Day weekend compared to last year, marking significant growth after the pandemic's impact on travel. Interestingly, domestic travel costs have decreased by around 2%, with gasoline prices averaging about $3.50 per gallon, down from $3.81 during the same period last year.

Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, emphasizes, “This is the time of year to go on an Alaska cruise. There are fewer crowds compared to earlier in the summer, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of fall colors!”

Travelers are also heading to cities like Orlando, New York, Boston, Las Vegas, Denver, Chicago, and San Francisco. Families look forward to Labor Day as the last chance for summer vacations before schools reopen, making it the perfect time for family outings.

For those considering travel abroad, international travel has seen a slight decline of 4% this year. This trend seems to correlate with rising travel costs abroad, as international trip expenses are up by roughly 11%.

Vancouver is noted as the top international destination according to AAA data, with multiple European cities such as Rome, London, and Paris capturing the attention of American travelers. This year's trend reflects travelers' preference for well-known international cities, supporting cultural exploration.

To help travelers plan their trips effectively, AAA has shared some useful tips, urging people to travel off-peak. Leaving early or late can significantly ease traffic frustrations on the roads, especially as congestion is expected to spike during the afternoon on Thursday and Friday.

AAA also encourages travelers to utilize their mobile apps to find the best gas prices and enjoy Member discounts. This way, road trips can be planned more efficiently, and unexpected issues can be handled quickly through the app’s features.

Smart packing is important too. For those flying, sticking to carry-on luggage can prevent baggage delays, and for road trips, it’s wise to have snacks and drinks ready to enjoy the drive.

Having alternate routes or activities planned is another excellent tip for ensuring smooth travel. Given the high volume of travelers expected, being prepared for unexpected detours is instrumental for stress-free travel during the holiday.

Beyond just travel, the benefits of flexible itineraries can also go hand-in-hand with the excitement of discovering new destinations. Family-friendly attractions, local festivals, and unique dining opportunities enrich travel experiences, enabling lasting memories with loved ones.

AAA's data also highlights additional travel trends for specific destinations across the United States. Here are the top ten domestic destinations for Labor Day travel:
